I've found that it was more helpful to have 1-3 examples of something specific that is a fit for your target audience instead of 12 samples of work that was more random. For example, if I wanted to help medium sized businesses re-brand, I would show a before/after image of how I helped an accounting firm stay relevant after being in business for 30 years. Potential clients all have a specific scenario and they are looking for someone to solve their problem. It can be difficult as a designer to pick what to showcase on your website and you may pivot after you've been in business for a while.
