Don't alter the way you communicate for the sake of sounding "professional". It is like putting up a wall. People want to connect with YOU. Tell them why you wanted to connect with them specifically. Long-lasting relationships come from a deeper, personal connection. Not just being in the same industry. Don't be afraid to be open and honest. The worst they can say is no (or not respond at all).
