How do you find inspiration for themes in computer-generated art?

It's much the same as doing any art work en plein air except that one's tools are a computer, stylus, and colour pad a la programme you use. As WSC said in his book on painting - Go for it, splash in the yellow, stir the red and attack the cowering canvas. In other words do not be frightened of a blank screen....

My computer generated artwork is generally interrelated with my physical works, and as such comprise a sophistication of an already conceived thematic inspiration. In cases where the digital work is the original conception, the process of inspiration is similar to the analogue vision, but with a less immediate set of tools, which play a unique role in shaping the ultimate form or theme. Fundamentally, in most situations, the process of realizing an inspiration comes from an emergent series of feedback loops between my consciousness and the media; from an aggregate of compounding choices evolves a resolved form and function for the expression. As this happens, I tend to realize the full meaning of the artwork as it happens, not prior.

I use (1) computer, (2) graphic image editor, & (3) monochrome laser printer as 3 digital pre-press aids to produce hand-pulled screenprints, which use neither a subtractive CMYK color space of machine printing nor an additive RGB space of monitors & phones. Pigments available for screenprints include metallics, powders, mica flakes, fluorescents, & additives. Digital processes (1) efficiently and accurately facilitate layout, (2) visually simulate pigments (e.g., transparency), & (3) precisely register & output layers as black ink positives on vellum. Positives are then used with light-sensitive emulsions to develop stencils on mesh for hand-printing. Neither computer generated nor inspired. Rather, computer assisted printing by hand.

Computer generated art is a powerful medium. But is it either not different than using other medium. Because a medium is like a device that help a person to interact with an environment. This device is given the ability to decode a language created by an environment and the language created by the a viewer/listener.

What excites you, or what view has a good perspective, what does the scene convey that you want to convey. It's there. It's then up to you to find it and exploit it, or use it to express what you feel - if only the effect of the weather at the time on a familiar townscape.

What interest me in urban area are abandoned neighborhoods. For me they are warning signs of the failures a political system. They also remind me of abandoned African village. Furthermore, i also consider urban area as an complex ecosystem that constantly evolves and force itself to coexist with others ecosystems.

When doing a series of relief panels on the Stations of the Cross I explored the Old Masters for poses to give a sense of continuity to an ongoing theme without relying totally on a life model.

Colour is important and adds vibrancy. It also highlights moods. On the other hand printing reduces subject matter to black & white and shades in between that are equally valid in expressing a mood or generating atmosphere. Each to your own for whatever works for you and better still for others. Where it creates empathy with a viewer you might find a buyer.

Because we have multiples sciences and fictions , I don’t believe that computer generated art is the only medium that one creative may uses in order to create Sci-Fi dreams. Because we have multiples cultures and traditions, we have multiple way to define a dream. A Sci-fi dream doesn’t have to be sophisticated.

I prefer to rely on actual experience and observation. I draw what I see. I observe and make connections. I look at actual objects not things generated by AI. I practice my skills every day to improve and to keep sharp. AI does not make a human connection. It is much easier to use the AI rather than using a human skill.

Following your heart. The heart is the compass for navigating the boundless possibilities of computer-generated art. Years of technical skill provide the map, an eye for curation the lens, but it's the passion that fuels the journey, guiding us to create art that resonates not just with the eye, but with the soul.
