How do you find and approach music industry mentors?

Quick tip: I recommend people avoid using generalized phrases like “pick your brain” - An easy way to show a potential mentor figure you’ve done your research is by referencing a specific question, topic, or area of their expertise you’d like to discuss AND why. Including the reason that subject interests you is another opportunity to relay a specific project you’re working on or goal you have in mind. This also give the person an opportunity to point you in the direction of another mentor who they think might be able to better assist you with your questions.

Finding and approaching music industry mentors can be straightforward. Start by researching professionals in your field—producers, managers, or established artists. Attend industry events, workshops, or online forums where they might be present. When you find someone you admire, reach out with a polite, concise message explaining who you are and why you'd love their guidance. Be respectful of their time and open to their advice. Building a genuine connection is key.

Your first reach out should be simple and to the point. Let them know what you're looking for and avoid going into too much detail. You could send a one page document/EPK to give them some background but make sure this is concise and useful.

Social media is an easy way to invest in what those potential mentors are doing and who they engage with regularly. Take not of common interests and take time to offer insightful and thought-provoking commentary to any conversations (without being annoying or intrusive). If you can get them to take note of the potential you have to offer, the direct ask later on might not seem so out of left field. And you never know who else might be taking note of your ideas or comments… the more you put out into the universe, the more opportunities it has to place you in front of an interesting opportunity.

It's acceptable to follow up once, at most twice at intervals of atleast one week each time. The best mentors are usually busy individuals who may be away or in a very busy period when you first message so don't be disheartened. Don't put your eggs in one basket and message a few potential mentors - you will find the right one for you before you know it!

Establish how best to contact and communciate with your mentor once you start working together - be it email, Whatsapp or otherwise. Stick to what was agreed and remember they are people too so avoid late night messages and weekends if you can. Remember to thank them and give back where you can.

Communities and peer-to-peer sharing can be wildly effective! Not only does it empower you with a group of musicians that have often encountered (and even found solutions to) the problems you’re facing, but it also provides a sense of accountability and reassurance to keep you motived. Honest, candid, and constructive feedback is the most value thing an artist can receive while building their music career and brand. Feedback is what helps Artist make better choices more consistently over time. A good mentor should also find ways to teach you think for yourself. A good mentor knows if they do their job well, you won’t need to rely on their experience forever.

Recording your progress is one fo the best things you can do to both upkeep your motivation, celebrate how far you have come and analyse what behaviours best contributed to your growth. You can do this easily in a document by looking at your analytics or writing about your qualitative growth. Remember to inform your mentor about growth milestones for further advice and to share the good vibes!
