How do you facilitate online dialogue on complex issues?

Just like in-person discussion of complex issues, we need to start from a place of openness, respect, and inclusivity of ideas. Setting clear ground rules and defining tools (is chat appropriate or not) and time limits are critical. Further, encouraging everyone to listen and paraphrase before sharing their thoughts is even more important virtually than in-person. Consider assigning someone to be a neutral facilitator who looks to bring evetyone to the conversation.

Government Transparency: A local government wanted to involve citizens in budgetary decisions. They chose a platform that had a structured format for discussions and included polls for gathering opinions. This structured platform made it easy for citizens to understand complex financial matters and actively participate in shaping their community's future.

Your audience greatly influences the type of online collaboration platforms you choose. Some people prefer texting to videoconference, others prefer videoconference to texting, while there is an amalgamation of both preferences. Therefore, asking the audience to reach a compromise as to which platform to use could help

In all facilitation settings the first step before you think about agendas, platforms, and facilitation is to get very clear with the sponsor on what the desired outcomes from the meeting are. It is best if these are specific and reasonably detailed. For a large meeting like this is the desired outcome to inform a large group of people of new information, to get specific feedback on proposals, to create relationships, to build an ongoing community? Each of these would suggest different meeting designs and approaches. Beginning facilitators often flip this process and start with platforms and agendas without being clear exactly what needs to be achieved. This can lead to missed opportunities for bigger wins.

With online dialogue come many challenges. One is that some participants just don't contribute to the discussion. Where I live, some refer to them as "monitoring spirits." (I don't know they are called that, anyway.) With ground rules as to dialogue, as well as the facilitator's responsibilities clearly defined, these can be nipped in the bud

As with public speaking, ensuring that the audience follow along with the facilitator is essential to keeping the discussion fruitful. Participants are eager to contribute to the dialogue because they know that they will be heard with understanding

Then, linger after the facilitation is done (but end on time!). The best conversations happen around the edges, often leading to deeper learning and ongoing engagement. Transferring this to online environments is pretty much the same when arriving. After the dialogue, providing some level of ongoing engagement means more than just providing an email or phone, or sending out the notes. You can invite people to communicate those ideas that come later in some sort of transparent forum. You can also structure some follow-up emails that provide related resources growing out of the facilitated dialogue.

I only started using the internet in my 20s, and I've seen its power and pitfalls. The web exposes us to diverse cultures, which is great, but it's easy to unintentionally upset someone. Words can mean different things in different cultures. The internet's anonymity can lead to careless comments or even online bullying. Just because we can say something online doesn't mean we should. As more people of all ages join online conversations, let's remember to be respectful and understand that every user is a real person with feelings and experiences.
