One thing I found helpful in getting around the noise generated from shooting with high ISO values was shooting in raw format. Fast lenses, such as an f 1.4, can allow for more light at lower ISO, however, it depends on the type of photo you want to capture. In my case, shooting a specific night landscape or star scene requires time. A high f stop (f 32 or f 64) lense is what I'll use along with a tripod. I'll also lock the mirror up and use a remote to reduce camera shake. Just depends on the type of photo you want to shoot.
