How do you evaluate feedback from a storytelling session?

Absolutely, defining your goals and intentions for your story is crucial before seeking feedback. Knowing what you want to achieve, who your target audience is, and the message you aim to convey will enable you to assess feedback more effectively. It allows you to filter out feedback that doesn't align with your vision and concentrate on suggestions that genuinely contribute to your story's growth.

I can't fathom using the STAR Method. It's way to wonky to use when listening to someone who is energized and emotional and wants to talk to you. I prefer to listen respectfully and then move on. I know when I nailed a story and when I felt short. Some people want to provide helpful feedback, while others feel the need to show you how smart they are. I take most feedback with a grain of salt. I find the feedback I give to myself to be the most objective.

I ask the readers/listeners of stories that I’ve designed three questions: 1. Did you experience a connection with the characters…were they relatable? (If so, I’ve done a good job researching my audience.) 2. Could you see the story unfolding in your mind as it was told? (If so, I’ve SHOWN instead of TOLD) 3. Did the story produce a desire for resolution? (If so, the conflict of the story was strong enough to elicit an emotional response.) Ask for feedback that will help refine the story in specific ways.
