How do you ensure design intent and flexibility when using parametric modeling?

To capture design intent and main specifications of an assembly, the best solution is I think to create is called a "Skeleton Model", to gather in one part per assembly all the driving geometries (axis, surfaces...) and parameters that will then be used (with links) for the design of each part.

Some techniques I would suggest: 1. When designing an assembly - have a layout model that contains minimal but necessary details: common datums, primary dimensions, important envelope geometries, common interfaces between downstream parts and to other neighboring components upstream. 2. Keep layout details to the minimum required to convey intent and key references. Keep fine details (rounds, chamfers, etc.) to the end parts. 3. Set driving dimensions such that they are consistent with the functional purpose of each feature. 4. Name features, variables and groups clearly, so that other users can understand the model topology. 5. If designing mechanism with different state - keep all parts to same default position.

Always consider that the model will live on and change ownership over time. Make it easy for the next engineer that will modify the part in later versions to understand the topology of the model and how to quickly change it without breaking decencies and such. Minimize each group of features to separate functional portions of the part, and try to keep them independent. Keep the sequence of features and groups in a way that is easy to follow.

The best solution to avoid any problems during design modifications is to be iso-constrained as often as possible. In your profiles design, in your Part Design and in your Assembly Design when using Assembly constraints. That's I think the best way to control what will happen when modifying design inputs.

NEVER leave a sketch under-constrained or over-constrained, even if your CAD software allows you to do so. It will always lead to unpredictable outcome and can change unexpectedly. For assemblies - if they aren't mechanisms intended to move - apply fixed constraints to all parts. Otherwise it may unexpectedly change and affect downstream artifacts like drawings.

Even of you use am external Excel sheet or alike to run calcs for key dimensions - it's preferable to mirror those parameters and equations directly in the model. Consider these to be the DNA of the model. Name the parameters and functions clearly and consistent with common naming conventions and across models. Avoid duplicate parameters.

Careful - many CAD systems and the PDM/PLM tools they are paired with may be difficult to manage such tools. Often times, once creating a family from one model - modifications can be tricky. For example: if you want to change only one family member - some systems will force you to revise all family members, and so on. It's preferable to avoid such tools and have independent models where possible. The ideal use for these tools might be simple library parts - like fasteners- that rarely get modified once created, and all have same topology. Avoid at all costs these tools for complex models and assemblies. Most PDM/PLM tools handle these poorly.
