1 Explain the purpose and benefits

To overcome these barriers, you need to explain the purpose and benefits of feedback and evaluation clearly and explicitly. In my experience, most students disengage from anything to do with feedback because they never see a change or outcome from making the effort to provide feedback. If student feedback is not going to be analysed and used straight away AND the feedback loop closed by informing students about the action taken then don't even start a feedback process.

In my experience, this is what most people miss as an opportunity to motivate students. The experience usually goes, "Let's take this survey," and that's the last they 1) ever hear about the survey, 2) changes are never made, and 3) they have no idea what the point of the survey is. Students who do not know or understand the survey may not give complete feedback, or lead the conversation in a way that is beneficial for them and the institution/department. For instance, if students are asked for demographic information, they might ask, "Why do you need my race/ethnicity/gender?" Or they might ask why you need their home state, but further understanding why will help them to give honest and complete feedback to the assessor.

2 Make it easy and convenient

Another reason why students may not participate in feedback and evaluation is that they find it too difficult, time-consuming, or inconvenient. They may not have access to the online platforms, they may not have enough time to complete the surveys or assignments, or they may not have the motivation to do so. To overcome these barriers, you need to make it easy and convenient for your students to participate. Use user-friendly and accessible online platforms, such as Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or Moodle. Provide clear and concise instructions and questions, and avoid jargon and ambiguity.
