How do you encourage collaboration in executive management?

If the goal is to encourage collaboration, then development of the vision, mission and objectives needs to be collaborative. I believe it’s best to see yourself as a facilitator and create a dialogue, asking the right questions, and develop a shared vision at the start. A good way to start my day to turn your statements. Are your thoughts and questions for the team. For example, “I think we should plan a team building exercise.” Instead reframe that as a question, “What do you guys think of creating a team building exercise to improve our collaboration?”

Collaboration in any arena and especially in executive management is not only "to be a collaborator yourself" but to recognize that management stands as role models for those they manage and the culture they are leading by example. Not everyone perceives 'collaboration' the same so the first step is to explore what it means to different people and learn how to listen to different perspectives - without pre judging what collaboration is. In the space of a 'magical conversation' executives form a safe non-judgement space to respect different viewpoints. Our views come from our own natural biases and experiences as human beings plus our perceptions of many elements we are now dealing with as 'executive management'.

I agree but it is not enough. Having a clear vision and strategy is a high level collaboration driver. You also need to have a day to day collaboration driver. This can be achieved by reaching maturity in culture and operating model.

Begin with defining a shared vision, mission, and OKRs. Get to know your executives - invite their feedback, ideas, concerns - and create a forum and a safe space to share alternate perspectives to achieve desired outcomes. Validate healthy contributions to the conversation. When facing silos, redirect leaders to collaborate 1:1 amongst themselves, seeking solutions as peer leaders. Collaboration is all about culture - what we permit as much as what we promote. Coach privately and celebrate wins publicly!

It is vital to understand people who are different to you, therein is the super power of collaboration that builds new levels of trust. We mistrust when we differ and see not relatable connections or similarities. In my work I educate men and women to value the differences as well as create relationships across uniqueness and similarity, we have to be open and willing to lean in and tune into others to build a bridge of rapport. I agree with the points made above. However, one thing that is really important aside having targets, is the ability to execute in a timely manner and to achieve a result that better than expectations. That's how leaders and teams excel, whilst doing this consistently.

"Individual and Interactions over Process and Tools" is one of the core principles of the Agile Manifesto. While not all organizations are going to embrace Agile, most could stand to become more agile, and at least a basic adherence to these principles helps to support an environment of trust, collaboration, and innovation. One of the biggest factors for collaboration is organization culture: It has to work as a literal construct that not only enables and equips for collaboration, but disincentivizes the traditional impulse of many managers to hold their cards tight and horde information as their own property. Access to data, intel, and tech support must be universal and barrier free. By enabling all units or teams to have what everyone else is using helps eliminate the 'exclusive' components hoarders use to maintain their silos and fiefdoms (concentrations of power). Politicization of organization cultures is a tumor on a company; it corrupts the ability to be fully agile, resilient, and collaborative. But depoliticization must be modeled from the top down.

I like to create collaboration opportunities just to see how my leaders react in cross-functional problem solving. I am not looking for a solution as much as I am the ability of leaders to appreciate the value of others as much as their own. Once I know I have the right leader in play, I know we are going to win. Each leader plays a key role in our ability to scale. The more unselfish, the more we all win.
