I disagree with this article. Let's consider a different perspective. A parent is taking their three children to a museum. Do they give them pretests first? Based on their results are they assigned specific tasks? Do we stop them before they go in and say "Okay, we are going to the museum, your goal here today is to...". This sounds quite silly to me. As both a parent and an educator I have never done any of these things. It seems like a sure-fire way to kill any excitement a child has. The biggest problem with IBL is over planning. Let them play, let them draw their own conclusions, then bring together their ideas to paint a big picture. This meets each student where they are and empowers them. Better yet, they actually enjoy the process.
