There are lot of different protocols such as CAN, IO-Link, ASCI etc. which operate on limited data bandwidth network. I like to think about optimization and efficiency for industrial automation based on the concept of digitalization. There is no doubt that IOT is one of the main pillars for connecting the entire production line with the cloud or a database, but just the available database does not translate into efficiency. An industrial digitalization strategy is needed that understands why, where and how each device is used to its best performance.

Whithin the industrial automation scenario, we can consider IoT networks composed of two main areas: sensor network (data acquisition) and platform network (data ingestion) network. Sensor networks are tipically OT networks that transmit industrial protocol datagrams (i.e. Profinet). In my humble experience, the main criticality come from firewalls that often block industrial protocols datagram (not really firewall friendly) or congestions (i.e. caused from a faulty PLC or misconfigurations). The second area of IoT network is more similar on a standard IT network where network admins feels more confortables. Point of attention: IoT edge component collect data from the sensor network (OT) and convert it into MQTT or similar IT protcols.
