What is the User-Story? How will the database be used? What are the sources? What type of contingent data can be captured? Can abstraction assist in the obfuscation of data which may be otherwise vulnerable? Is the data atomic/best-practices? Are there any contingent data relationships that are not represented in the model(timestamps of transactions etc)? How does the data inform its own organization? After building a model, has the user-story changed? Can the model be adapted to better suit user-experience? Are new capabilities or data relationships discovered? Should the model be adapted to suit changes or new discoveries about the dataset?
In my experience, this first step, when taken seriously, can help prevent the most common headaches later on. Understanding how your data needs to interact with itself to achieve the end goal from the outset will prevent needing to restructure later on.

Don't try and reinvent the wheel. It's very likely that someone has worked on a similar project before and the DBMS that worked for them will likely work for you. Go where the support for your field is.

There are many tools available these days to validate your database solution but it is better to get a better understanding of databases so that you can understand in granularity those test release.I can understand sometime due to fast project cycle we have less time to understand granularity so better try to understand Application flow to database and what all component come into picture so that you can tweek this parameters accordingly.
Start by explaining the use of the dataset(this may change later). With the user-story generate ideas of what the database should track. Identify sources(datasets or user input) review the list of items and categorize them according to which part of the application will use them, and if they are front-end or back-end. Determine data dependencies and apply data best practices with an emphasis on search-ability and compatibility with potential external datasets, as well as which content is user-specific/protected. Model the DB and review it by discussing the User-Story in reference to the database and the functions of the application. Then create the db with a rapid prototyping method and query/test the db.
