1 Assess your current system

In this step carried out assessment survey of your current system in order to carefully evaluate either migration is necessary required or not: (1) Carried out EOL (End of life) assessment of all software and hardware components. (2) Existing vendor ability and commitment to retain the level of support for current system. (3) Review the adaptability, scalability and form factor of the current system in order to evaluate either partial replacement of obsolete items is enough to retain the continuity of existing system or full upgradation required due to technological obsoleteness. (4) Prepared scope of work document after assessment of your current system.

2 Select a migration approach

In my experience, DCS migration approach needs to be carefully chosen and it depends on If the DCS migration is being offered by same OEM or some other. In case the OEM is same then it might not be a totally rip and replace task. Most OEM only offer Upgrade of discontinued modules along with software, workstations and HMIs. This way, marshaling cabinets and field I/Os are retained. This allows for a cost effective migration in minimum down time. In case the OEM is separate, specialized migration conversion schemes need to be adopted for a smooth transition. Some manufacturers offer specific application conversion tools and hardware migration strategies for a seamless transition.

3 Choose a migration partner

The third step is to select a migration partner that can provide you with the expertise, resources, and support you need for a successful DCS migration. You need to look for a partner that has experience and knowledge in both your legacy and target DCS platforms, as well as in your industry and application.
