SQL Server offers two main approaches to design and enforce data retention policies: Automated Cleanup with Data Retention Policies: Define Policy: Set a retention period for data, automatically deleting older records. Background Task: A system task scans tables periodically and purges obsolete data. Custom Logic with Stored Procedures or Jobs: Develop Logic: Create stored procedures or SQL Agent jobs to identify and delete old data. Schedule Execution: Schedule these routines to run periodically (daily, weekly, etc.). Both methods have their advantages. Automated cleanup is simpler to set up, while custom logic provides more flexibility. Choose the approach that best suits your specific needs and desired level of control.

2 Implement data deletion strategies

Once you have your data retention plan, you can implement various strategies to delete data that is no longer needed from your database. For instance, the DELETE statement can be used to remove individual rows or batches of rows from a table based on a condition, such as a date column or a status flag. Additionally, the TRUNCATE TABLE statement can be used to remove all the rows from a table quickly and efficiently. However, this statement cannot be used on tables with foreign key constraints, triggers, or indexed views. An alternative method is to use partitioned tables to divide a large table into smaller segments based on a partitioning column, such as date or category. Temporal tables can also be used to track the history of changes in a table over time. This involves creating a corresponding history table that stores previous versions of the rows and specifying how long to keep the historical data in the history table with the RETENTION PERIOD option. The CLEANUP POLICY option can then be used to enable automatic deletion of expired data.

Usually Truncate is not used as a data deletion strategy in any RDBMS production environment . The best way to deletion is to check how the tables are connected with other tables by FK and PK and delete them cleaner
