How do you design an e-book cover that grabs attention?

All three of my books apparently have been stated as having great TITLES that grab ones attention and have them hanging on for answers. ie: a) "WHAT a LIFE! ...Things my children don't know about their Mother!" b) "Welcome to Heaven, ... revealing my visits." c) "3 EASY Steps to SUCCESSFUL PARENTING". ALL 3 of these titles 1st grab your attention, then leave you hanging on for the answers.

It's also a good idea to test search terms and think about what your likely readers might be looking for. Why would someone happen upon your book organically? How can you increase that likelihood? As search engines improve, increasingly SEO (search engine optimization) is synonymous with quality content, but it's still smart to consider what your potential readers are searching for and what words and phrases they might be using. Many, many authors get attached to a title that they feel fully describes their work or that they see as their brand. Sometimes that can work out, but I'd recommend being prepared to "kill your babies" or at least approach your research with an open mind.

Hiring a designer is a great idea if you can afford to. You might know exactly what you want your cover to look like or what you want it to evoke, but it can be difficult to create that if you don't have the design chops or even the software. A couple hours of a designer's time may cost you less than the software you'd need to produce a professional looking cover. There have been many times in my career when I have provided a pretty half-baked design brief and a designer has delivered something that checks all the boxes--the cover or design I didn't know I wanted. A designer can help you secure the image or images to use in your cover and produce final files that are high quality and work in a number of sizes and aspect ratios (if needed).

Most authors make this mistake while designing an e-book cover: NOT approaching it from the marketing angle. Your book cover is more of a marketing tool than anything else. The simple goals (and how to implement) are - 1/ Attract their attention (visual) - Make the title easy & catchy - Craft a benefit-driven subtitle - Use big fonts to read even in thumbnail 2/ Appeal to their needs (cognitive) - Your book cover should make a promise - Title+subtitle+image actually does it - ToC shows how you deliver it 3/ Nudge them to convert (psychological) - This is easier if you did #1& #2 right - The first visual impression is crucial - The delivery of the promise is conveyed by the book Description (on book's landing page). Nail these!
