I think one fun way to brainstorm ideas and to see if they would actually work is by having a quick design sprint to not only come up with ideas but to test, prototype and get feedback as well. Another fun way is to list out all possible ideas or solution starting from A to Z.

I think we all have witnessed that sometimes best-practices and rules create sterile, bland but very accessible digital experiences. We need to keep reminding ourselves that what we sometimes need, is to introduce more surprise. Sure we can go through the entire Maslow’s pyramid and focus on ‘more delight’, but it’s meaningless if you focus on it alone. You need the foundations of the pyramid (accessible), but on that you continue to build and introduce delight, surprise and actually create meaningful and differentiating digital experiences. Don’t make it 100% according to the rules. Make it slightly imperfect and interesting. Steer away from the bland.

Just like a well-designed video game, where players have rules to follow but room for creativity within those rules, a user-friendly digital experience can be innovative while adhering to established usability conventions. I would like to add that sometimes, when creating an application, you need to think not only that it is simple, functional and affordable, but that it has a special, captivating user experience. Which will probably make using the application more difficult, but more interesting, because the user is willing to sacrifice some convenience for a unique and interesting experience. It's like in games - is it interesting to play games that have no difficulties, no challenges, no bosses? Think about it :)
