1 Data warehouse architecture

There are three main types of data warehouse architectures: enterprise data warehouse (EDW), data mart, and data lake. An EDW is a centralized and standardized data warehouse that serves the entire organization. A data mart is a subset of an EDW that serves a specific business unit or function. A data lake is a distributed and flexible data warehouse that stores raw and unstructured data. Depending on your data sources, you may need to use a combination of these architectures to achieve optimal performance, scalability, and flexibility.

2 Data modeling

The next step is to model your data according to the needs and goals of your analysis. Data modeling is the process of defining the structure, relationships, and constraints of your data. There are two main approaches to data modeling: dimensional modeling and normalized modeling. Dimensional modeling is a technique that organizes your data into facts and dimensions, where facts are numerical measures and dimensions are descriptive attributes. Normalized modeling is a technique that organizes your data into tables that minimize redundancy and ensure data integrity. Depending on your data sources, you may need to use different levels of granularity, aggregation, and normalization to balance query efficiency and data quality.

3 Data integration

The third step in the process is to integrate your data from different sources into your data warehouse. Data integration is the process of extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) your data from various formats, types, and locations into a consistent and coherent format. Depending on the data sources, you may need to utilize different tools, methods, and schedules for ETL. Common challenges with data integration include data quality, such as validating, cleaning, and enriching the data for accuracy; data lineage to track, document, and audit the data; and data change to manage updates, deletions, and additions for timeliness. Solutions must be applied to address each of these challenges in order to ensure traceability, accountability, compliance, freshness, and relevance.

4 Data analysis

The fourth step is to analyze your data using various techniques and tools to generate insights and value. Data analysis is the process of utilizing statistical, mathematical, or computational methods to uncover patterns, trends, or relationships in your data. Depending on the type of data sources you have, you may have to employ different forms of data analysis. For example, descriptive analysis involves summarizing, visualizing, and reporting the data to understand what happened or is happening; diagnostic analysis entails drilling down, slicing and dicing, and comparing the data to comprehend why something occurred or is occurring; predictive analysis requires machine learning, data mining, or forecasting to predict what will occur or might occur; and prescriptive analysis necessitates optimization, simulation, or recommendation to suggest what should happen or could happen.

5 Data security

The fifth step is to secure your data from unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure. Data security is the process of applying policies, procedures, and technologies to protect your data from internal or external threats. Depending on the data sources, you may need to employ various levels and methods of data security, such as data encryption with cryptographic algorithms to encode your data, data masking techniques to hide or replace sensitive data with fictitious or anonymized data, and strategies to copy or replicate your data to another location or medium for recovery or restoration purposes.

6 Data governance

The sixth step is to govern your data according to the standards, rules, and roles of your organization. Data governance is the process of establishing and enforcing the principles, policies, and practices for managing your data throughout its lifecycle. Depending on your data sources, you may need to utilize different aspects and functions of data governance, such as data quality management to measure, monitor, and improve accuracy, completeness, and consistency; data metadata management to define, document, and maintain structure, meaning, and usage; and data access management to control, monitor, and audit who can access, modify, or delete your data.
