I think it's the Apple or Steve Jobs way... start with the customer and work backwards. If enhancing customer experience is your North Star, then your API should be a smooth and intuitive bridge to customer satisfaction. For streamlining operations, imagine your API as the gears in a well-oiled machine, harmonizing various processes for peak efficiency. And if discovering new revenue channels is your quest, treat your API as a map to hidden treasures, unlocking new partnerships and markets. This focused approach turns your API from a mere tool into a compass, guiding your business journey towards its ambitious destinations.

I think designing an API, it's all about really getting to know your users like what they need and what makes things easier for them. The API should be user-friendly, keep their info safe, and always prioritize their privacy. Say your users are big on privacy, then your API should really focus on strong privacy features. This approach means your API isn't just about flashy tech; it's practical and lines up with what your business stands for. In the end, you create something that solves problems for people.

Resist the temptation to jump at making a CRUD API mirroring your DB schema. That's the worst pattern many people follow. Keep in mind - 1. Consumer(s) - Align the APIs to suit the consumer's business operations and NOT the UI as that can change over time. 2. API Economy - Design the API for the future. New consumers should be able to use the API without the need for branched logic internally. Align the APIs to your domain model. 3. Auth-X - Design auth model for any API correctly from the start. This cannot be an afterthought as it will break many old consumers. 4. Serialization Weight - Take the most lightweight transport mechanism so the payload with/without data is most efficient. Don't choose long JSON attrib names!

However it's also important to keep the consumers aligned as well to check compatibility for consuming the response for different platforms. The structure and naming convention should not be named technically, it should be named keeping in mind that a leyman person also able to understand the purpose of that. It will always help in maintaining uniformity in design.

Some considerations for the API Contract design to minimize the learning curve for your users - The format of the specification should follow industry standards. Objects, Resource names, Field names etc., should be intuitive and easy to understand.Consider the ubiquitous language leveraged by the users in the specific context.
