The above definition implies that the outcome of the decision is important for decision satisfaction. That is true, but can lead to poor assessment. Gambling your entire life savings on 13 at the roulette table is not a good decision. Even if you win and have a great outcome, it would not have been a good decision, it just means that you were implausibly lucky.

If you are looking for satisfaction get a dog. The only important aspect is that you actually make the decision in the first place. You need to be prepared to hate the decision you choose.

I'd say decision satisfaction is important so that we learn to trust ourselves to take action and move forward. If we are continually dissatisfied with the choices we make, we eventually will stop making choices and have our lives governed by chance or other people's choices. That way we won't need to take responsibility and can blame others or fate for our poor fortune. On the other hand, if we learn to make good quality decisions, decisions rooted in a good understanding of what matters to us, what options we have, and what uncertainties are involved, we can be satisfied EVEN IF the outcome is not what we wanted. We won't feel demoralised and despondent and will move on.

3 How to measure decision satisfaction?

There is no one-size-fits-all method to measure decision satisfaction. However, there are some common approaches that you can use or adapt to your situation. One approach is to use self-report scales or questionnaires that ask you to rate your satisfaction with various aspects of your decision, such as the process, the outcome, the effort, the speed, the accuracy, and the fairness. One of the best ways I deal with this is by having a 5-point scorecard Decision: Launch product in a new market by investing 3x to earn 10x ( Risk 3x loss and potential downsizing in the company) Scorecard Parameters: Peer & Team Acceptance ( 1-5): Data & Insights pre-decision ( 1-5): Internal emotion ( 1-5): Risk to Reward ratio ( 1-5): Ability to pivot or change mid-way (1-5): For Human or personal decisions also it works. For complex decisions, I merge them with the ICE matrix ( Impact, Confidence & Effort). This overtime accelerates decision making time and reduces internal conflict.

There are some strategies that you can use to increase your decision satisfaction, both before and after you make a decision. Before you make a decision, you can increase your satisfaction by clarifying your goals, criteria, and alternatives, gathering relevant and reliable information, analyzing the pros and cons of each option, involving others who can offer different perspectives and insights, and choosing the option that best aligns with your values and preferences. After you make a decision, you can increase your satisfaction by reviewing and evaluating your decision process and outcomes, seeking and accepting constructive feedback, celebrating your achievements and learning from your failures, and adjusting your actions and expectations as needed.

5 How to cope with decision dissatisfaction?

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may feel dissatisfied with your decision or its consequences. This is normal and inevitable in some situations, especially when you face uncertainty, complexity, or trade-offs. However, you can cope with decision dissatisfaction by adopting a positive and proactive mindset. You can acknowledge and accept your emotions, but not let them overwhelm you.
