1 What is creativity?

Creativity is the ability to generate novel and useful ideas, products, or solutions. It involves both divergent thinking (generating many possible options) and convergent thinking (selecting the best option). Creativity can be influenced by individual factors, such as personality, motivation, and expertise, as well as environmental factors, such as culture, resources, and feedback. Creativity is not a fixed trait that you either have or don't have; it can be developed and improved with practice and training.

Creativity isn't measured by hits, impact, and exposure. Instead. creativity centers on the idea of seeing the invisible while doing the impossible. Our current society stymies creativity in its conforming nature. At the beginning of learning and understanding, we will find creativity. Recognizing the world around us is in continuous change and creativity figures out ways to be part of that change. The most creative have been exposed to yes, possibility, why, and always going deeper without negativity. So, creativity flourishes when we are open to all ideas. Therefore with respect to creativity in evaluation, it is crucial to frame questions where the possibilities of responses are beyond the static of this or that.

Often times, the resources available to conduct evaluations are so limited that creativity is needed to define high quality indicators that can be affordably measured. Creativity in defining indicators can also strengthen the findings by allowing evaluators to measure aspects of program interventions and impact that were not previously analyzed. Being able to conduct more thorough analyses improves the quality of impact of interventions and those that follow.

Creativity in evaluation is essential. It allows us to adapt and innovate, especially under tight resources or shifting contexts. In my experience with foreign aid programs, creativity has enabled us to develop unique indicators and methods that capture the nuances of interventions more effectively. It moves the evaluation team away from a 'one size fits all' approach to indicators and methods. Creativity is also helpful for effective communication. Disseminating findings creatively (and in line with stakeholder needs and data literacy) also makes insights more impactful!
