How do you decide which user feedback to prioritize when developing new product features?

In developing winning product- 1. Identify target users/ Segment positioning of the product. 2. Understand user's needs, their problems by direct face to face meeting or focus group discussion or conduct large sample size survey collecting quantitative and qualitative data 3. Do competition benchmarking to identify how user needs are being addressed in the market 4. Priorities user needs/ problems which are already solved by competitor offering features as "must have" features 5. Add "USP" features solving users' problems unique way using technology /innovative way thus giving you differentiated competitive advantage and offering high value preposition such that user pays premium 6. Low perceived value high-cost features to drop or hold

In my view, all user feedback holds value. However, when it comes to prioritization, conducting a risk/benefit and risk/impact analysis is essential. This approach helps us identify which feedback presents high risks, impacts on goodwill, affects turnaround times, and involves the expected volume of affected users, associated losses, and potential competitive advantages. After this analysis, we can categorize the feedback using prioritization techniques to rank it. Prioritization involves planning what we aim to achieve and determining our capacity to accomplish it. It's crucial to include all stakeholders in preparing the data matrix and setting the right priorities to ensure alignment and comprehensive decision-making

Understanding user needs involves deep engagement with users, careful analysis of feedback, and strategic prioritization of features. By focusing on must-have features that solve pressing problems and enhance satisfaction and retention, you can ensure that your product remains relevant and valuable to your users. Remember, the process is iterative, and staying responsive to user feedback will help you continuously improve and succeed in the long term.

While it is true that new features should be continually evaluated against your product vision and long-term strategy for suitability, it is also important to consider whether you should pivot based on emerging user needs. Impact vs Effort Analysis is a widely used method to prioritize product features. On the Y axis you can put the impact in low and high category and on the X axis you can put the effort in low and high category, thus producing a 2x2 matrix. 1. High impact, low effort - 1st priority 2. High impact, high effort - 2nd priority 3. Low impact, low effort - 3rd priority 4. Low impact, high effort - 4th priority Impact can be assessed by estimating improvement in metrics such as increase in revenue/ net margin, increase in conversion rate, decrease in churn etc.

Some feedback fall under strategic alignment and some are basic hygiene ex. ensuring the contact no. provided by user should be verified (maybe via an OTP). For all other feedback, we should perform an impact x effort assessment to build a priority list. High impact with low to medium effort should be at the top vs a low impact - high effort. Note that impact assessment should consider holistic impact including technical impact (ex. load time), user journey impact, user experience impact, monetary impact, legal impact etc.
