Please don't tell people how to enable Telnet. If it's already on and absolutely has to be used... that's one thing (still not great). It should never be enabled after the fact, especially if you don't know what you are doing.

SSH replaced Telnet for a reason. SSH does more than Telnet ever did. SSH has support for multiple types of encryption and when one type gets compromised it's generally dropped from the default implementation. Shilling for Telnet is a bit like trying to convince whale oil is better for their lamp than kerosene at this point.

4 Test telnet connection

I don't use the telnet server; however, in some cases I will use the telnet client to test if I can connect to a remote server. For example, let's say I have a application that runs on host 1.2.3.4 and listens on port 33000. I will test connectivity from a client-host by using telnet 1.2.3.4 3000. If it connects...I know my network path to the application is good (and not blocked by something like a firewall).

Just because ping works is no guidance that telnet will work. Just because ping fails is no guidance. Ping and telnet are orthogonal. If you are using the telnet client to test network connectivity, and somebody sees you doing it, they will laugh at you and think you 'way behind the times. Use netcat (a.k.a. nc). It will do almost everything a telnet client can do, and more! And.... nc can be scripted easily.

This doesn't align with the earlier comment that some telnet implementations offer encryption. That said, I wouldn't use telnet. There are more appropriate alternatives, and to be honest making a remote connection to manually manage a server is a dated approach overall for lots of organisations.

You can also use the netstat command (every tcpip client should have this command available) to see if the telnet server is listening on port 23 (i.e netstat -an | grep 23 ...unix). You can also use the netstat command to see the state of the tcp connection between client and server when communicat is slow (send and receive queue).

The only time Telnet should be used is as an absolute last resort - if some device does not support SSH. If you insist on having Telnet as a tolerated connection service, at least install TCP Wrappers so you can see what's going on when people like Kevin Mitnick knock on your door. This Danny Styles fella telling you never to use Telnet a whole lot? He is not wrong. Listen to him. SSH or VPN all the way. The best way to use telnet is to disable the service, uninstall the telnetd daemon, and make sure your firewall is configured properly. Telnet is a plain text protocol with no encryption so anyone can snoop the traffic and read exactly what you've sent and received, including passwords. 0/10 do not recommend.
