One thing I've found helpful is to scaffold the steps in a group project. For lower level learners or totally new subject matter, the cognitive load of assigning an entire project without checkpoints is much too high. I prefer to give these leaners an overview of the entire project before assigning the first step. I follow this up with evaluation and support on step one before students move deeper into the project. Confusion and embarrassment are likely to cause conflict within groups, so this cuts down on any feelings of inadequacy.

While it's critical that we teach our learners not to plagiarize the work of others, I've also found that it's a mistake to go into the classroom with negative assumptions about students' intentions. Plagiarism looks much different in collectivist cultures where knowledge belongs to the whole society. I prefer to approach this by educating students on what's normal and respectful in this academic context. It's also a wonderful opportunity to point them toward additional resources from the perspective of helping them connect with the campus community. The library and writing center are great partners in these efforts.
