I agree that understanding your audience is a critical step in every job search, as it helps you comprehend what the prospective company requires in relation to your capabilities and future aspirations. In my experience, it is equally important to present a clear and genuine picture of your contributions to the previous organization. This provides a quick sense to the recruiter of your capabilities. Researching the culture and history of the company helps you tailor your messaging during interviews, and prospective employers find this to be a significant strength. Lastly, always remember to stay true to yourself and pursue the profile that you genuinely desire. This is the most important aspect.

In my experience a good resumé is: 1) Objective: Tailor your resumé according to the specific skills that the job requires in a few main bullet points. 2) Communication skills are an excellent highlight: Regardless of the area your in, if you are a good communicator, the whole company will benefit from your skill. Which means you will have a great value for the whole organization.

At this point in the process, you have decided that your skills and experience align with the position, but before you go any farther, it is wise to validate your perceived alignment. Here's how to do it: 1) Copy the entire job posting into a Generative AI like Chat GPT and ask it to generate a resume.. 2) Read over the generated resume, asking yourself, "Does this sound true to me?" 3) If yes, then tailor your resume, using as much or as little of the AI output that honestly fits your resume. 3a) If no, then even your tailored resume isn't going to get you an interview. AI can assist your evaluation, but the decision and the resume content is up to you. It can confirm your choice to apply, or suggest that you not waste your time.

When I'm reviewing resumes to select interviewees, and even more, when I'm interviewing people for my teams, the technical/skills/experience portions of the resume are important to a degree, but what I'm really looking for is someone who really wants the job. If you can show me that you aren't just another resume -- that you're actually someone who cares about the work that my teams/projects/programs do, then you are much more likely to get an interview or an offer. All that is to say, yes, make sure your credentials are on point and align with the job's requested qualifications, etc., but just as much, or perhaps more, make sure that I can see WHO YOU ARE as much as what you've done or know. Good companies hire people, not qualifications.

Being able to highlight your ability to intimately know the product you are supporting and ways you go beyond just eliciting and documenting requirements is key. Technical skills are great and are definitely the hurdle that you must overcome, but being able to both apply knowledge of how users will behave and preempt some of their more “creative” approaches to system usage is also a fantastic thing to highlight.

I would be very careful with providing any numbers as a measure of your achievemnts. You can't just say I increased revenue by N%. You metrics must be calculated. For example, you analyzed your sprints reports in jira and can say that because of integrating user stories and clear jira issues hierarchy into process, your team has better feeling of storypoints and is able to estimate tasks accurately so that they can deliver the committed scope, the amount of bugs have become less by N%, the team's velocity has increased by N%. So be very careful and specific with cause and effect. The fact that you conduct scrum ceremonies cannot improve quality of the code itself. DoD can. Also team's contribution cannot be presented as personal success.

Go through the skills and requirements lists and include as many as you can. Always give an example from your past experience, work or non-work related, to evidence.

Outlining your achievements is important, but even more critical than that is to highlight them in a meaningful & measurable way. To do that: - make sure you know your metrics and not only how they were measured, but also why these metrics were defined and are important - use the correct data format to call out the results, for example just saying increased $100,000 in revenue may not add much value as there no indication of what the earlier revenue was. So using % in this example would be more impactful - not every statement / bullet point in your resume needs to have a result/data associated with it

As a business analyst, I am not sure providing x% growth or y% decline in defects is a correct measure of the metrics we work on. Company growth, revenue increase, less defects, retention rate etc are not under a business analyst control. According to me, what matters more is more value to the product, decrease in delivery timelines, a better managed and clearer team.

Use empathy to try and make sense of what you have achieved and how you work would add value to the company you are applying to. Bigging up your results will most probably end in tears for both ends.

You can find open positions of companies operating in biology sciences domain which look for a BA who has a degree in biology. Hence, it might be beneficial to show irrelevant education. That logic works for all domains. You should analyze your background to point out what is relevant for each individual position you're applying for. It's highly valuable if BA has scrum, SAFe, project management certificates, general UX cources. You can't have deep knowledge of every area, but that proves that you can be effective in cross-functional teams grasping additional responsibilities if necessary or freely iteract with other positions fully understanding their motivations, constrains and techniques.That part of resume is universal for any position.

Here's a simplified version of the tips: 1. Keep a record of all training and classes, including on-the-job training. 2. Prioritize continuing education to stay updated on in-demand skills. 3. TIPS for documenting SKILLS, EDUCATION, & TRAINING 1. Keep historical log of all on-job training at work, special classes, etc. 2. Continuing education is important for inclusion (esp. for current skills that are high in demand) 3. Pursuing professional designations in computer or business skills are worth extra investment of time to differentiate 4. Gain expertise beyond day-to-day usage of SQL, MS/Project/Office/etc, BUSINTEL, JIRA, AI, etc (free u-tube & web training sites abound as valuable resources) 5. Practice skills that are highest in demand (if you don't use it you lose it) 6. Even taking night courses at local community college on needful basis is great investment 7. Learn from your mentors & SMEs at work
