If you want, you can also present the technical aspect to the non-technical audience to give a glimpse of the technical complexities of the solution you are presenting so that they will appreciate your approach. However, use simple and relatable terms in the explanation. This will educate the audience about the machine learning approach whilst pitching the impact of this solution to solve their pain points and problems.

Great insight to keeping the content understandable to the audience. Too many times I have seen great content in utilizing machine learning presentations with acronyms which are not relatable to everyone in the audience. I prefer to rely on full content over acronyms.

No matter if you are presenting ML methods to a technical or non-technical audience, it's always a good idea to begin your presentation with a motivating practical example; preferably with informative graphics. A relevant picture or graphic illustration is perhaps worth more than tens of bulleted items or hundreds of sentences. However, there is no need to go overboard with fancy graphics or too many figures packed within a slide. A simple but informative graphic illustration with only a few words often works better than a bunch of formulas, even for technical presentation.

2 Define your purpose

The next step to customize your machine learning presentation is to define your purpose. What are you trying to achieve with your presentation? Do you want to inform, persuade, educate, or inspire your audience? Depending on your purpose, you might structure your presentation differently, using different types of evidence, arguments, and stories. The most powerful presentation I’ve seen for this was through the DAD-MIT AI Accelerator’s Know-Apply-Learn program with the MIT Media Lab. Under Cynthia Breazeal’s brilliant leadership as PI, they’ve put together some amazing hands-on experiences to teach such complex concepts as visual model training, autonomy, and even overfitting. Putting the student in control of the process did wonders, teaching concepts I’ve struggled to teach others with various means (and to little avail sometimes) more successfully than I’d imagined possible.

One bit of advice that I always give my team when presenting results to less technical clients is to leave numbers off of plots as much as possible. Most of the time the numbers don't matter and you are trying to convey a relationship or shape. In my experience keeping numbers on plots almost always leads to unnecessary questions or discussions instead of understanding the point of the plot.

How are you going to use your language, voice, and body language to communicate and connect with them? Depending on your style, you might use different strategies and skills to improve and enhance your presentation. For example, if you are presenting to a formal and professional audience, you might use a clear and concise language, a confident and authoritative voice, and a calm and composed body language. If you are presenting to a casual and friendly audience, you might use a conversational and humorous language, a warm and enthusiastic voice, and a relaxed and animated body language.

How are you going to measure and optimize your performance and impact? Consider what the audience wants to do with the information. Frequently, technical presenters imagine their purpose is to show how the sausage is made. But non-technical—especially business—audiences already believe you know how to make the sausage. They want to know if it’s safe to eat, i.e. they need to make a decision. The challenge for the technical presenter is to include the things the audience needs to make the decision, and leave out the rest. As Hemingway said, sometimes you have to “kill your darlings”.
