I've found helpful to think about "knowing your audience" in a broader sense. Beyond surveys and forms, using the actual workshop to get to know them better, as if you were having a 1-1 conversation with the group. When people feel that you're there to learn from them, learn about them, this turns into a win-win for everyone. You can deliver content in an engaging way, you can learn more about your audience, and you give people a chance to be heard. It's a win all around!

What ways I like to know my audience before presenting is to get a brief bio with a picture. Then I am familiar with the attendees and as they walk in or sign in I make a connection. This up front knowledge lends itself to a comfortable start for me and opportunity to engage quickly with thé participants.

2 Define your objectives

Once you have a clear picture of your audience, you need to define what you want to achieve with your workshop. What are the main outcomes or takeaways that you want your participants to learn, do, or feel by the end of your workshop? How will you measure the success of your workshop? You can use the SMART framework to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives. Beyond the typical SMART objectives, think also about how you want people to FEEL at the end of your session. FEEL stands for: F-furry E-engaged E-energized L-lots of fun Just kidding. I just made that up - but my point is this - using humor for example is a result of having a clear sense of how you want people to feel. Energized? Connected, with each other, with you? Comfortable? Motivated to change? Supported? Understood? Hopefully a bit of all of the above, but what's your top goal? You can of course use a eval form at the end to see if you've achieved this!

3 Choose your format

Just a quick aside here, I've found more and more, especially after the isolation of the pandemic and the many years prior, people are craving the ability to connect with each other. If you are doing an in-person event, consider removing tables and physical barriers and having people be able to see each other's faces when they speak. This allows for vulnerability and connection, something that is often missing in workshops but folks really tend to draw a lot of benefit from.

I love the focus on adaptation here. You can come prepared of course, but the primary concern should be "is this relevant, useful, engaging for my audience?" and sometimes that means pivoting, or skipping to your second to last slide for a few minutes and then coming back. It's great to be OK with flexibility - bonus points if you can skillfully keep the through-line or overarching theme.

The final step is to evaluate your workshop, both during and after the workshop. You need to collect and analyze feedback from your participants, your client, and yourself, to assess the effectiveness and impact of your workshop. You can use different methods to gather feedback, such as surveys, testimonials, observations, or reflections. You also need to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your workshop, and the areas for improvement or innovation. Evaluating your workshop will help you learn from your experience, celebrate your achievements, and improve your future workshops.

Evaluating the workshop benefits three main audiences: the workshop participants - you can report back to them and let them know the impact of the workshop as reported by them. prospective clients - you can showcase the amazing results from your event and entice other companies/organizations to want to partner with you for impact You - as stated above, evaluating will allow you to grow - keep what works, leave what doesn't - or at least leave it for another setting.
