How do you create tests that measure learning?

First, establish clearly what do you really want out of it or its just a formality in the name of test. From there, develop questions that directly align with these objectives, ensuring they cover a spectrum of cognitive levels. design questions in a diverse formats such as what have you learnt, a short answer and what global problems you can solve from these aquired skills. You may ask MCQs but i have seen people getting score due to their hunch and not real knowledge so ask them open ended questions in test/quiz. Also its better to ask the timeline of implementation of learned skills thru the training. Finally it's better to let them know the real purpose of the test as i mentioned earlier. then as per the score guide them to progresss

Bloom's Taxonomy of learning is a good framework to help you think about assessment, particularly if you use the same framework to establish you learning objectives. Objective and Assessment should go hand in hand.

What I do is very simple. I have a Pre-Test - 10 simple questions to test the participants' knowledge on the topic before the training commences. I generally give this as a Pre-training assignments, collect the results and present it to the participants at the beginning of the training program. This lets them know where they are starting from. Once the program is over, I administer another test to find out how much the learners have learned. Even if they have moved 2 to 3 points from their pre-test, it clearly indicates that they have learned and gained the knowledge in the classroom. Whether they would get back and apply the same at the workplace also depends a lot on the framework conditions at their workplace.

Offers efficient grading but can be susceptible to guessing. - True/False: Tests basic understanding, but limited scope and prone to ambiguity. - Matching: Assesses ability to associate related concepts. - Short Answer/Essay: Evaluates analytical and critical thinking skills, but requires careful grading and can be subjective. - Performance-based: Assesses practical application of skills through simulations, role-plays, or real-world tasks. - Case studies: Simulates real-world problems and assesses decision-making and problem-solving skills.
