This will help you identify the most critical assumptions and risks that you need to test with your prototype.

Before defining the problem to solve, it's important to consider where did the problem come from. Is it from uses feedback, internal stakeholders, or simply a strategic roadmap items you are trying to deliver? This will help you see a clear picture of what outcome you want to achieve and guide you in the right direction. Once you see the full picture, conduct design thinking workshops with stakeholders to map out users' flow, stories, and pains, using a voting framework to manage your planned features and identify scope. I personally like the MoSCoW framework(Must-have, Should-haves, Could-haves, and Will not have).

2 Sketch the solutions

The second step is to sketch the possible solutions that address the problem and the goals. You can use techniques like crazy eights, solution sketches, and dot voting to generate and select the best ideas. You can also combine and refine the ideas into a storyboard that shows how your prototype will work and look like. The storyboard will serve as a blueprint for your prototype and a guide for your testing.

3 Build the prototype

The third step is to build the prototype using tools and materials that match your level of fidelity and your testing needs. You can use software like Figma, InVision, or Adobe XD to create digital prototypes, or paper, cardboard, or Lego to create physical prototypes. You can also use existing products or services as mockups or placeholders. The key is to make your prototype realistic enough to elicit honest feedback from your users, but simple enough to finish in one day.

4 Recruit the users

The fourth step is to recruit the users who will test your prototype and provide valuable insights. You can use methods like screener surveys, social media, or referrals to find and invite the right users for your target audience. You can also use incentives like gift cards, vouchers, or discounts to motivate them to participate. The ideal number of users is between three and five, as this will give you enough data to spot patterns and trends, but not too much to overwhelm you with noise.

'Recruiting the users' could actually start simultaneously with defining the problem. Talking to/observing the users might help define the problem better than secondary research alone. It could also have a benefit such as being able to conduct experiments with the same users for pre and post design.

5 Test the prototype

The fifth and final step is to test the prototype with your users and collect their feedback. You can use tools like Zoom, Google Meet, or Lookback to conduct remote or online testing, or find a suitable location for in-person testing. You can also use scripts, scenarios, and questions to guide your testing and ensure consistency. The goal is to observe how your users interact with your prototype, what they like and dislike, and what they suggest for improvement.
