Although setting rules and routines can work really well with older and disciplined students, with the young "gadget-friendly" generation it is a difficult approach. A lot of my younger students (teens and under) hardly ever practice on their own. Hence to make sure they progress I need to make them practice in class. But that too is problematic because of their attention spans. So what I tend to do is introduce the practice as a game. One idea I use regularly is that I tell them I will listen to their piece after 5-10 minutes of practice and they will have 3 lives to go through it. Each mistake costs a life. If they lose all 3, I step back and they have to practice it again for 5-10 minutes.

True! One thing that need to keep our mind is Teacher-Students relationship. As a teacher we need to know what student needs. Every child are special. Make them feel comfortable and confident with themselves is the key. Teachers should be able to bond with students. No matter how hard and many numbers of students.

Whenever a student plays something which is different than the original, I never shush it out completely. I always encourage them that it can be played like that. Why not! However, I stress the need of playing it as it is on the sheet music as well so that they don't start seeing it as an easy way out to finish the piece. That will not train the discipline required to learn at higher levels.
Right! Music is language. There is no wrong about music! Let them explore their feelings through music. Encourage them. Respect them.
