How do you create clear hypotheses for data analysis?

This is an example of a hypothesis that could be used for data analysis using COVID-19 data: Hypothesis: There is a significant correlation between the level of urbanization of a region and the rate of COVID-19 transmission. This hypothesis could be tested by collecting data on the number of COVID-19 cases per capita in different regions and comparing these rates with data on the level of urbanization in these same regions. If there is a significant correlation, this might suggest that urbanization contributes to the spread of the virus.

I like to think of generating hypotheses as a process. It usually begins with an observation: for example, in quantitative research, that the effect of gravity on light in the universe is off, or qualitatively, that election polls online are not accurate. After thinking through our observation and referencing relevant literature to see if this problem is explored, we take things we already know and craft a hypothesis that is falsifiable and testable. We work through the variables and controls, and make sure that the research question behind the hypothesis is sound and most appropriate to explore an observation. It is easy for researchers to be confident they know the answer, but we must approach hypotheses in a way that limits our bias.

An alternative approach to generating hypotheses is through exploratory research or qualitative inquiry. Instead of starting with existing theories or literature, this approach involves immersing oneself in the research context to gain a deep understanding of the phenomenon or problem. Through methods such as interviews, observations, or case studies, researchers can uncover patterns, themes, or unexpected findings that guide the formulation of hypotheses. This bottom-up approach allows for the generation of novel hypotheses that may challenge or expand existing theories, fostering innovative insights and potential breakthroughs in understanding.

Refining hypotheses typically involves making them more specific, measurable, and testable. Example: Original Hypothesis: Exercise affects COVID-19 recovery. Refined Hypothesis: Patients who engage in moderate exercise (150 minutes per week) recover from COVID-19 symptoms one week faster than those who don't exercise regularly. This refined hypothesis specifies the type and amount of exercise and the expected effect on recovery time.

Anticipate other possible explanations for the observed patterns and consider whether they could better account for the data. Your hypothesis should be distinct from these alternatives. Review and refine your hypothesis as needed based on feedback, additional data, or further analysis. Iterate on your ideas to develop a hypothesis that is both plausible and testable.

Testing hypotheses actually takes time and knowledge! To do so effectively, one considers given variables and their types according to the problem. Hypothesis testing is iterative and does not give accurate readings all the time as results vary. For instance, the textbook hypothesis testing, involving confidence intervals, H0/H1 (null/alternate) and normality, does not necessarily give us sufficiently enough information to make a conclusion. One possible reason is that unexpected source of error cause the testing to give incorrect interpretations.

To test hypotheses, start by reviewing existing literature to understand the current knowledge in your field. Choose an appropriate research design and select a representative sample. Collect and analyze data using suitable methods and analytical techniques. Evaluate the evidence considering statistical significance, effect sizes, and qualitative patterns. Interpret the findings in relation to your hypothesis, previous research, and limitations. Reflect on the research process and communicate your results effectively. Taking a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to testing hypotheses will lead to robust and meaningful outcomes.

As mentioned previously in my remarks, hypothesis testing takes time and knowledge. Without properly executing the test, readings will not offer us correct ideas, but inadvertently philosophical misconceptions (because of science). Excellent hypothesis preparation always follow starting steps!
