How do you cope with the challenges and opportunities of remote collaboration in music projects?

Having collaborated remotely since 1999, I've navigated the evolving challenges and opportunities in music projects. Key to successful collaboration is establishing clear agreements on workflow and business aspects. It's crucial to decide on audio formats, like whether to use 48000 Hz 32-bit float or 44100 16-bit, ensuring smooth file transfers, ideally under 2 GB. Pre-defining the musical and lyrical direction is also essential. Most importantly, drafting a clear agreement beforehand can prevent disputes later. These steps have been fundamental in my remote collaborations, adapting to changes in technology and internet capabilities over the years

These are a few tools and platforms I like specific to remote music collaboration: Video conferencing: Zoom Lyric writing/ notes: Google Docs File and document sharing: DISCO WIPs: [untitled] Real-time collaboration: Audiomovers Project management: Notion I love that Bandlab was mentioned here, I need to try that out myself. I usually just stick to Logic or Protools. Word to the wise: If using Dropbox or Google Drive, please remember to set the proper permissions!

The two main considerations here used to be: 1 - The platform to exchange your files and; 2 - whether you would exchange project files, audio stems, midi etc. This way of working is still very relevant as it is highly dependent on the collaborators. You can easily share files using cloud storage (think google drive/drop box etc) and depending on whether you are using the same DAW you can decide on a format of file to share, project files if using the same DAW give great flexibility but component audio stems may be just fine for the project in question. the more recent developments of online platforms make a much more tangible collaboration possible literally sharing access to the same project and building together.

Having created a 14-song album remote and written songs for artists in London and Sweden while living in LA, I found remote collaborating to be such a fun and creative thing. Sharing project files between computers is hard because it's hard to know if the VSTs, the versions of them, and everything else will transfer properly. What I loved to do was to export stems. It ended up feeling like we were remixing each other's ideas, and after a few back and forth, it became something creative and something I would not have made if we were together in person. Getting to work alone and sharing your ideas together is awesome. Also, if you use Zoom, make sure you check the "High-Quality Sound" option when sharing your screen!

This is what separates professionals from amateurs. Goals and deadlines are important so that all collaborators are on the same page and so that deliverables are submitted for any potential opportunities promptly. I've used both Asana and Trello for project management. Either is fine. The free versions work great for smaller groups.

There is great variance in how we all like to approach creative work. Setting some guiding principles is a good idea at the outset. These can be formed into more specific deliverables that all sides are happy with. Perhaps the most essential discussion at the outset is that of intellectual property and copyright. It is a good idea to have these discussions first and set out how this will work before jumping into creative mode.

Good communication is essential in all collaboration. Although we have all adapted to conducting meetings remotely and messaging via apps there still needs to be some extra care taken when you are not face to face. We are not able to pick up as easily subtle cues from body language etc. We also treat our creations as extensions of ourselves so do remember that and employ the best 'soft skills' - repeat back action points and seek clarification regularly

Respeito e educa??o também deve ser visto e realizado dentro da arte da música. Cada pessoa tem sua rotina e horários para trabalho, principalmente quando tem diferen?a de fuso horário, mas mantendo as metas claras com flexibilidade e respeito é o que vai fazer o projeto ter sucesso e a rela??o de trabalho ser duradoura.

Few things work better than a good ol group chat, whether that's on text, WhatsApp, or Telegram. I love Slack personally because of how it organizes channels, but that's not as necessary depending on the size of your collaborative group. The key is to be able to easily separate different flows of conversation, so use whatever tool to your disposal that allows for that best.

Consistent communication is key for remote collaboration. Tools like Slack or Discord are great for daily check-ins and quick updates. Pair these with regular video calls to discuss progress and brainstorm ideas face-to-face. Using platforms like SoundCloud for feedback ensures everyone can easily share and review tracks. Also, setting clear deadlines and using project management tools like Trello can keep everything on track. Keeping the conversation flowing with these methods really helps in creating a seamless remote working experience.

Communication is key (as always ;-)). It is very important to clarify the main channel of communication /sharing of data; taking into account that there will be the need for different types of content : text, .mp3, midi files, pictures,.... an droom for iterative work and feedback.

hearing how another artist handles your ideas is invigorating and stimulates more ideas on your side too. It's a learning exchange which mirrors that of artists working together in a band. As we push the boundaries of remote collaboration we will develop new forms.

La tecnología en las comunicaciones y los medios técnicos a poder implantar en nuestras casas o estudios ha hecho que podamos interactuar con otros profesionales como si estuviéramos en la misma habitación.Y la música donde la tecnología a revolucionado este sector no iba a ser menos.Debes de identificar al profesional o músico con el que te gustaría colaborar, perder el miedo a exponerse y de forma respetuosa hacerle una propuesta de colaboración, ojo! no va solamente de tu proyecto hay que dar para recibir, la suma de las dos partes debe de ser mayor que el resultado individual.Y una vez aquí ambos deberéis de aprender uno del otro, ser respetuosos con las ideas propuestas, experimentar y exponer el resultado, analizar y evaluar.

When collaborating on a project "The Other Side" between artists at The Roundhouse in the UK and Redbull Studios in NZ we had the challenge/advantage of the time zones being totally opposite. The UK team would create/edit during day time hours, upload at the end of the day which was the start of the day in NZ. It was like the perfect non stop production line. Whilst the UK team were in bed the NZ team were busy writing and recording their idea and would reciprocate the process. So we would wake up and open the projects and hear all these new awesome ideas at the start of our session
