How do you cool computers in hot, humid environments?

Be aware of the environment! Preventative maintenance in a server room is different than in a client's office or home. Server rooms don't normally have to deal with pet hair. A person's office doesn't usually have a dozen other machines heating up the same space. Don't isolate your efforts to just the hardware you're working on and, especially, pay attention to how other aspects of the environment are going to affect the equipment in the future. Are the vents on the AC unit clean, too? Is there a water source nearby that can create condensation? Is there more than one UPS handling the load? Is there enough air space between hotter units? What is the user doing to address issues? Do they understand?

First of to ensure adequate airflow, computer has to be kept away from dust and moisture. This is the ensure that The heat sink is free from any blockage. The Fan as well is no exception. When their is no blockage, their will be adequate airflow. When their is blockages due to dust and moistures around the fan blade, heat that are meant to go out smoothly will be heating up the GPU chip which can damage the motherboard.

A common mistake we all make is using the laptop on our lap, which will block the airflows and the laptops may overheat. And always make sure to restart the computer when you feel the fans are noisy or the computer is overheated, in most cases there will be some background apps or activities running and making the CPU overloaded.

If you live in a very humid environment, then a dehumidifier will be helpful to reduce the moisture in the air. While not necessarily in most situations it can help along with air conditioning during extreme heat. You will also want to make sure that your desktop is not placed directly on carpet since air can be sucked in from the bottom of many cases. Instead use a hard platform that allows for the air to pass under the computer for better airflow.

As far as servers go, every place should be cool especially air conditioned. But often they're not. But everything should be set up for maximum air float and in a way where one equipment's hot air isn't getting on another. Space and placement matters. As far as users computers, I've ran into some crazy bad setups. One persons area killed one computers and a component of the replacement within a day. I said what I said. The computer on top of the desk would take up too much space so I had them order a part that allowed me to install it under their desk in a way that it was practical to them Cable management can help as well. Keep it clean/pretty but also keep it functional.

If you have standardized hardware from a specific vendor, you may be able to centralize the reporting and determine patterns regarding temperature and get alerts when thresholds are met. Faulty fans may not always report as failed in onboard diagnostics or remotely monitored diagnostics so close up interaction/inspection with the computer is required. Sometimes you may need to remove/reapply thermal paste to help with dissipating heat.

Make sure that your system is up to date with updates,, firmware / bios updates always plays a key role in maintaining the overheat and CPU stability,,

If you are using an Nvidia GPU with their GeForce software, then you can track many GPU readings in real time. To access this feature while using the computer you can select alt+f12. This will give you fps counting, cpu usage, GPU usage, all in real time while gaming. This can be helpful to see if your components are working harder and possibly overheating.

Monitoring helps. But also be mindful of the specs of the PC as well as what software you're using and where you got it from. On my home PC. I built it to be quiet. Giant cpu cooler with quiet fans, Quiet fans through out the PC as well a high end case with great air flow and cable management is done. If I hear fans there's an issue. The server I built... I can hear it. It was a cheap build from a cpu that I sourced out of a janky pc sent to me. That was free. When you use software to monitor, be aware there can be extra surprises. Also if there's a paid version of it and you're using the free version for work, you can get sued if that vendor finds out. Some companies do track this.

If you have standardized on a hardware vendor, you may be able to utilize their applications for individual and multiple computers for configuring the best solution for optimal performance and proper cooling as well as quietness. For Windows based systems, you may also be able to deploy Group Policy configuration to the computers on a per system/per department/per company basis if necessary.

On some systems you can choose the cooling profile. Some will only run fans reactively, some proactively. Some OEMs give a tool for this, some are in the BIOS, and some may require a 3rd party tool. If you are dealing with a higher power workstation where noise isn't a consideration it can be worth it to choose a very aggressive cooling profile, or even run the fan 100% constantly. If the cooling solution is appropriately sized it is one less worry about overheating, or in most modern system throttling.

Laptops can be tricky because they are all designed differently. Some vent to the side, some to the back, some to the bottom and, as bad as it sounds, some not at all. The heat from the processor may be addressed but, especially in some older models, the heat from the display panel and hard drive haven't been properly addressed. Every time your computer "overheats" it has to potential to do permanent damage in the form of cracked processors, warped hard drive platters, shorted connections and so much more. It's like having to buy a case for your phone. The manufacturer doesn't know how you plan to use your particular device so invest in it from the beginning and it will last and serve you well.

When I lived in a hot room (80+ Fahrenheit) I connected some 4" flex duct to the back of my PC with a 120mm fan to 4" duct conversion from Amazon, and ran it to the return air vent in the room to vent as much of the hot air as possible. Since the PC was the source of the vast majority of extra heat in the room, that noticeably reduced the air temperature which helps with PC cooling. Tip: Consider whether or not you want pre-insulated flex duct. I had to wrap reflective insulation around the flex duct and tape it in place myself, which isn't easy. The plus side to doing this was not needing to handle fiberglass insulation. Another tip: Pre-plan how you're going to hang the flex duct from the wall/ceiling. Tape can rip paint off the wall.

This is probably the most under estimated/stated part about this subject. PROTIP: When you do this, keep a record of what you did, when etc. I've been on corporate contracts where cleaning, maintenance, updating/upgrading has done wonders for PC's. Sometimes this was essential because either new PC's weren't in particular departments budget for whatever reason. One time I did it on a PC that was assigned to me and my bosses were wondering why it as fast if not faster than the new ones they got. Another PROTIP: Keep in mind typical issues of issues to certain models, it'll help you troubleshoot quicker.

Maintain the cleanliness of all vents and fans by using canned air to remove dust, hair, and other debris that may accumulate within these areas. Another commonly overlooked aspect of maintenance is the need to replace thermal paste. Some suggest changing it every year, which, depending on usage, might be excessive. However, other sources recommend a range between 1-3 years. My recommendation is to reapply thermal paste every two years, unless you are overclocking or consistently running heavy loads. In these cases, it could be suggested to replace the thermal paste annually, or possibly even every six months.

When I'm asked how to help with routine maintenance, I'm typically grateful that I was consulted before something more serious occurred--like, for instance, someone thought they did a good job replacing the thermal paste on a CPU, but failed in the proper application, resulting in a fried CPU. This leads to other things that have to be checked, if not an outright suggestion to just get a new computer (depending on severity). Ask for help if you are at all uncertain of what you are doing. You can do a great deal more harm trying some of the maintenance tasks on your own, then by asking someone with more knowledge/experience on what you want to do.

Keep track of your maintenance agreements/support contracts. You want to be able to replace faulty parts as soon as possible to prevent other heat related damage or additional costs by having to "pay out of pocket" to get repairs that should have been covered.

Research is your biggest ally. Entire discussion groups are dedicated to sharing information about how to properly treat your equipment. Find out, before you buy, if air cooling is adequate or, in the case of a desktop computer or server, if you need to invest in liquid cooling options. Look into open or closed rack options for your server(s) or standalone computers. Find out what cases and upgrades work best for a custom gaming computer. Consider security and how a locking cabinet or tight security cable on a laptop is going to affect cooling options.

In OEM systems the cooling solution is often designed correctly. In custom machines / workstations it's up to the designer to specify the solution. This isn't a place to cheap out, and no machine suffers from too much cooling. Throwing 20 - 50 dollars extra at the onset can cost less than lost productivity and service calls.
