A presentation outline and a presentation script are two essential tools for preparing and delivering a successful presentation. But how do you connect them effectively? In my perspective most of the tools for presenting ideas in the form of a story tends to force the creative to think in linear terms which can be detrimental to simplify a sprawled idea which is complex. A non-linear mapping is good to find the core points that can be the pillars of a story to gauge a stakeholder without them getting distracted. A script being linear can struggle with cutting to the chase & in the final stages everything boils down to editing the content & even though, editing is a good skill to have in your arsenal, that's horrible way to proceed with a story.

In January 2020, I was asked to present at a company quarterly presentation. Here are the essential experiences I want to share. (1) A previous colleague once told me, your audience doesn't know what you are gonna talk about. We present for them to learn from us - that helped me calm my stage fright. (2) Both are there on purpose. The outline for you to be reminded of what's next in your topic. And a script that guides you to your time when presenting. Note that scripts are not meant to be read fully but to fill you in when you get a mental block. Subsequently, you can categorize the gathered information into themes or groups to amplify clarity.

For each section of your outline, write a paragraph or a few sentences that explain, elaborate, or illustrate your point. Use transitions, signposts, and summaries to link your sections and help your audience follow your logic. Use language that is appropriate for your audience, purpose, and context. Avoid jargon, slang, or filler words. Use examples, stories, or analogies to make your content more relevant and memorable.
1. Oftentimes slides are designed to be in bullets which might limit the content you are trying to elaborate. The script can play a vital role in explaining them. 2. The script can also be used as means to clarify a point in the slide which without elaboration can convey a different meaning than intended.
To revise your outline and script, you need to check them for clarity, accuracy, and effectiveness. Read your script aloud or record yourself and listen to how it sounds. Check if your script matches your outline, and if your outline covers all the essential points. Look for any gaps, errors, or redundancies in your content, and make adjustments as needed. Ask for feedback from someone who can give you constructive criticism, and incorporate their suggestions.
To practice your outline and script, you need to rehearse your presentation multiple times before the actual event. Use your outline as a cue card or a memory aid, but do not read your script word for word. Try to speak naturally, confidently, and enthusiastically. Use gestures, eye contact, and vocal variety to enhance your delivery. Time yourself and adjust your pace accordingly. Anticipate possible questions or objections from your audience, and prepare responses.
