In my experience, the two ends of the research spectrum are - not making the bare minimum effort to get to know the other person or on the other end research so intensively that nothing feels enough. What has helped me is deciding a timeframe. As soon as the time is up, I go with whatever information I have been able to collect in that time. There is no need to be creepily updated with everything about the other person or be totally unaware of who they are.

3 Be respectful and professional

When you contact someone, you want to make a good first impression and establish trust and rapport. Be polite, friendly, and professional in your tone and language. Avoid using slang, jargon, or emojis. Address them by their name and title, unless they invite you to use a more informal form of address. Thank them for their time and attention, and acknowledge their expertise and achievements. Don't be pushy, demanding, or entitled. Respect their boundaries and preferences, and don't expect an immediate or positive response.
