How do you conduct user research and testing to inform your user interface design decisions?

I used my time as a barista to observe customers and other team members to identify software-related issues, customer experience quality, and service design bottlenecks. Then, I created personas based on these observations, collected public information, and interviews with patrons. I didn't utilize surveys because I didn't have customer email addresses, but they would have been a great method to collect quantitative data for this project. I also looked at the company's social media page and Reddit threads for employee and customer comments about the service, products, and experience. This guerilla research tactic added depth and clarity to the personas and customer journey map for my project.

For example, if you’re testing a new head’s up display for an automotive vehicle, you might consider conducting talk aloud sessions in the field while someone operates the vehicle and product. However, if you were testing a landing page to see which version gets your message across better, you could probably do that remotely using A/B testing tools like UsabilityHub, Maze or Google Optimize.

Usability testing assesses user performance, satisfaction, and feedback in lab, remote, or field settings. A/B testing compares different interface versions for performance evaluation. You want to go in with an open mind to uncover opportunities you may not have thought of. So this research can help you uncover what problems are worth solving for. When you have come up with a few ways to solve users’ problems, you can plan for evaluative research. This type of research is focused on evaluating a range of solutions and can help you understand how best to solve a given problem based on feedback or it can help you refine your proposed solution and guide your design decisions.

Consistency is key. I start by defining clear objectives and choosing the right methods based on the project’s needs. Recruiting the right users is crucial – it’s like casting the perfect actors for a play. During sessions, I ensure a respectful and empathetic environment, always following ethical guidelines. Analyzing data with visual aids helps in presenting findings clearly. And remember, it’s an iterative process – keep refining until you hit the sweet spot.

Here are some of the best practices that I utilize myself: ? Begin with validating your test by asking a confirmation question at the beginning of the test. ? Use at least 5 participants in your testing group. This will be enough to get 85% of the usability problems that affect 1 in 3 users. ? When writing multiple choice or screener questions, avoid asking leading questions or "yes/no questions". (The purpose of a screener question is to narrow down your audience.) ? Avoid leading or biased questions ? Utilize qualitative questions to understand the "how" and "why" users interact with your product, service, or user interface.

It's essential to iterate on designs multiple times to address any identified issues or pain points effectively. This iterative approach allows designers to gradually enhance the user experience, ensuring that the final product meets user needs and expectations.

This involves organizing, interpreting, and synthesizing the findings to extract actionable insights.
