1 Routing Protocol Types

Routing protocols can be classified into two broad categories: interior gateway protocols (IGPs) and exterior gateway protocols (EGPs). IGPs are used to exchange routing information within a single autonomous system (AS), which is a group of routers under the same administrative control. EGPs are used to exchange routing information between different ASes, usually on the internet. Some examples of IGPs are RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, and IS-IS. Some examples of EGPs are BGP and EGP.

2 Routing Protocol Characteristics

3 IPv4 Routing Protocols

IPv4 is the fourth version of the internet protocol, which is the most widely used one. It utilizes 32-bit addresses to identify hosts and networks on the internet. Common IPv4 routing protocols include RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP. RIP is a distance vector protocol that uses hop count as a metric and sends updates every 30 seconds. However, it has a limited hop count of 15 and is susceptible to routing loops and convergence issues. OSPF is a link state protocol that uses cost as a metric and only sends updates when there is a change in the network; it is more scalable and reliable than RIP, but requires more resources and configuration. EIGRP is a hybrid protocol combining the features of distance vector and link state protocols; it uses bandwidth and delay as metrics, sending updates only when there is a change in the network. Although it is fast and efficient, it is proprietary to Cisco devices. Lastly, BGP is an exterior gateway protocol using path attributes as metrics; it runs the internet and enables inter-domain routing, but it is complex and requires careful configuration and management.
