Prior to benchmarking AV tech, it is important to understand the popular approaches to AVs: Any successful AV that hits mass production will be a mix of technologies such as Sensors, LiDAR, Radar, and HD Maps....with 1 of these techs being the 'leader', supported by rest. Presently, there are 2 key approaches towards a functional AV: 1. HD Map and LiDAR Lead: Adopted by the likes of Waymo, Baidu and Cruise, has been under testing for a while, with mixed results. 2. Sensor Lead: Adopted by the 2 stars of the AV industry, in Tesla and Mobileye, it seems to have the backing experts as the AV tech for the future.

IMO, the best metrics for full robotic systems are based on their ability to complete a relevant task. While that sounds a little hand-wavy, I mean it to imply that metrics like "miles/disengagement" are specifically not useful because most autonomous vehicles aren't supposed to complete miles, they're supposed to complete trips. So rather than miles, a better metric might be "median consecutive representative trips without a disengagement."
