Opt for run charts, control charts, or Pareto charts to compare performance across groups or interventions. Utilize driver diagrams, logic models, or storyboards to showcase the impact of your QI project by linking aim, measures, changes, and results.

I have found that there are three types of people in an audience: 1. Those who respond to data 2. Those who respond to stories/emotion 3. Those who respond to authority/leadership itself In reality, people are a mix of all three, but tailoring the communication of the QI output to provide something for all three audience-types can ensure that your message has been received!

Any tool can be useful. If the story is good, you could present it on the back of a napkin. I don't recommend that, of course. For all findings and recommendations, make sure you have references for all supporting details. Someone will always ask about those.

In my experience, I feel the BEST results are testimonials of others who have followed the presented path. Feedback, stories, how-to, time frames, what traps to avoid, etc; all help to get the buy in from those who have to carryout the plan. It also instills confidence that “we can do this” as often when rolling out a new plan for improvement there is resistance. Lastly, paint the picture of what life will be like when the project is completed.

In presenting QI findings and recommendations, clarity is key. Opt for straightforward language over technical jargon or acronyms to ensure understanding. For instance, rather than stating "We conducted a retrospective cohort study utilizing administrative data from EHRs to evaluate the correlation between medication adherence and readmission rates among chronic condition patients," you could say "We reviewed patient records to see if taking medications as directed affected how often they returned to the hospital."

Showing data in a visual format makes the data come to life. Visual data can be more impactful especially when showing comparisons. Microsoft data tools are easy to use and are very customizable.
