How do you choose the right migration strategy and partner for your mainframe environment?

Migrating from mainframe to cloud offers compelling advantages. Cloud environments provide scalability, allowing businesses to adjust resources based on demand. For example, a retail company can handle peak holiday transactions efficiently. Cost efficiency is another key factor; cloud eliminates the need for large upfront investments in mainframe hardware. Additionally, cloud facilitates modernization and innovation, enabling rapid deployment of new features. For instance, a healthcare system transitioning to the cloud can enhance patient care through data analytics and telemedicine. Overall, the move to the cloud ensures agility, cost-effectiveness, and technological advancements.

One often overlooked set of factors in making the "best" choice of strategy needs to consider just how much of an existing application system was created using anything that does not exist on the target environment(s). Even if a something technically exists, there may be serious challenges in conversion from the mainframe version to the target environment "dialect". A serious challenge specific to data stored in one or more of the esoteric formats on the mainframe will be whether or not that data must be converted during migration - not all EBCDIC field formats are ASCII-compatible.) In my experience, both of these make conversion of mainframe Assembler code particularly challenging, regardless of the target environment.

Selecting the appropriate mainframe migration to cloud strategy is crucial. Challenging will be few of the in house tools/utilities like job scheduling/source control management to match right available tools in market.

Core within setting up the migration plan is setting a firm/fixed "stable" version-set of all elements being migrated. Equally important for the longer term within a migration project is establishing a robust plan to capture (and prioritze!) any essential changes identified after the migration has begun, whether or not they are to be implemented on EITHER platform.

From personal experience, the communication with users is CRITICAL to both success and _perception_ of success. EVERYONE needs timely updates on progress. Celebrate success, acknowledge setbacks, & tailor the message to the audience -- maintain consistent, TRUTHFUL information throughout. The most critical risks will include anything that is not directly converted to the needs of the target environment. If an application in Assembler is to be re-written in another language, that should be flagged as a critical item up-front - and extra attention paid as to why it is "necessary" ... The same applies to any utility that does not have a direct equal on the target system. "Simple" system utilities often are stumbling blocks.

Two critical areas, (personal experience in migrations: mainframe to other systems & between incompatible OS): ONE: Up-front analysis of the mainframe must be COMPLETE, with elements identified & priortized for conversion, replacement, or abandonment. Any "one-time"/ad-hoc requests from recent regulatory reports should be included and preserved in an accessible form: the evaluation must clearly identify any & all dependencies or restrictions, with clear record of decisions for anything NOT converted/replaced. TWO: Consider the regulatory needs well before "lights-out" decisions for the mainframe! Pay good attention to the integrity of backups, however preserved: media, accuracy, special requirements, any external vendors, ETC.
