In my view, no product development (PD) happens single time, means PD is a continuous learning process until we find a stable solution through selection of Ingredients>stage of addition>process parameters (Time/Temp/pH/Viscosity/texture etc.) finalization>Proper PM selection>storage & distribution stable product. In every stage of product development Viz lab trials>Pilot Trials> plant trials>commercial production and post commercials we find one or the other better factor which improves your product quality/stability, so its very very important to review your process & products time to time and compare the same with your reference product to know the difference. record and update the same as an solid reference R&D quality standard/s.

Find the quality standard is the bottom line of any industry. To me, a toy player, ASTM F963 and EN 71 are most common standards to follow. But per my experiences, to win the heart of customers and users, you need to give them something beautiful, above that, you need to give them something with temperature to touch the softest part of their heart!

That will lead to a more expensive end product that may not be competitive in the market, depending on the type of product. I would recommend to look at research use only instrumentation and materials during the early phases of R&D - a relatively lower cost of ownership. When the project is moving towards success in pre-production phase to review the need for market-approved materials and instruments. A balance between these 2 factors will ensure good success later on when the product comes into market.

As a consultant with forty years of experience in Research, Development and Operations, I think that the definition of R&D is insufficient to define activities under current conditions, and that employees have difficulty in fitting their activities into this mold.
