How do you choose materials for Civil Engineering Design?

While selecting the building material, one should be aware of the type of project for which the material will be used - the site conditions, exposure conditions, strength requirements, building type, etc. Once the material type is finalized, the availability of the material needs to be ensured, otherwise, choose alternate material. The strength and durability characteristics of the material are to be determined before using the material for construction.

Materials sampling may be achieved through observations made on already completed projects especially the materials that have used and have had the test of long time exposure that will be proof of their quality or lack of it. This method may not be easy to achieve given that it may be applicable only in locality but gives a better representative if there are project similarities.

When selecting a building material, it is important to ensure that it is risk-free and won't cause any issues down the road. Building materials made of hazardous elements or garbage should also be taken into account. Additionally, it is crucial to confirm that the building materials chosen pose a risk to workplace safety.

Materials for Civil Engineering designs are chosen, using different selection criteria (Typically formulae, or mathematical relationships) which are dependent on their design purpose, design environment, physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the engineering materials amongst others. As we become increasingly aware of the effects of man made structures and infrastructure on the environment, it is important to select materials which have lower environmental footprints, are less socially controversial and are also cost effective.
