How do you choose a graphic design partner or team member?

A good portfolio is only the beginning. But then, there are a lot of good portfolios. So it comes down to how someone expresses, discusses and accepts critiques of their work. It doesn't matter how good a designer is, if they can't adequately discuss the work with you, it's not a good sign. We're in the business of communication, and talking about the design is as important as creating it.

One thing I've found helpful is that its really important that your goals and visions align with the person you're hiring. Creativity is not something you can train a person for and so you have to consider the overall personality of the person's work and see if it aligns with your goals. As far as budget is concerned, I believe there are certain ways like hiring in house designer instead of freelance or giving recognition to the designer on your platform along with the compensation. Also, I believe it should be someone who gains your trust as design is a very back and forth process and the results always keep improving as far as you Trust the person's creativity and expertise.

While it's crucial to be mindful of your budget, especially in business, when it comes to talent and creativity, sometimes being a bit more flexible in terms of cost can lead to remarkable results. Instead of solely focusing on finding a balance between quality and affordability, I believe it's equally important to prioritize the value of creative talent. Exceptional creativity can often provide unique solutions and innovative designs that may outweigh the initial cost considerations in the long run. Ultimately, it's about striking the right balance between budget constraints and the potential for creative excellence.

Pick a designer and love them! I of course review resumes and portfolios but especially for more Junior roles it comes down to attitude. Who’s eager to learn and grow alongside me? Design leaders need to build confidence in their own abilities to nourish talent. When you believe in someone, hear them out and are invested in their development they’ll give you their best work.
