2 What is PGP?

PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy. It is another standard that defines how to encrypt and sign email messages using public-key cryptography. However, unlike S/MIME, PGP does not rely on certificates issued by trusted authorities. Instead, PGP uses a web of trust model, where users can create their own keys and exchange them with others. Users can also sign and vouch for each other's keys, creating a network of trust relationships. PGP also uses asymmetric encryption, but with some differences. The sender encrypts the message with a symmetric key, which is then encrypted with the recipient's public key. The recipient decrypts the symmetric key with their own private key, and then decrypts the message with the symmetric key. In the early 90's, (before SPF, DKIM, and DMARC techniques for authenticating email) I realized that email authentication and email privacy could be useful tools to fight the impersonation of email users and (later) spam messages. I enthusiastically jumped on the early PGP bandwagon to find there was no band. I had only one correspondent (a longtime friend at HP) who was interested enough to exchange email public keys, but after awhile it was obvious that signed or encrypted email as a matter of routine/process was still in the future. There was a bit of (still recurring) panic and pushback from the government regarding internet encryption at the time, and I suspect that threw cold water on public adoption of this technology.

I just finished evaluating "eM Client" as a potential desktop and mobile client for gmail and exchangeonline. PGP support is built-in. Key creation, publishing and sharing is well supported with features in the client. Mobile clients can be quickly configured with a QR code in the installed desktop app. This looks like a pretty solid alternative to the included free windows mail app, Thunderbird or old/new Outlook....if you want a simplified PGP exerience. "Em Client" has a free tier for personal/evaluation and a reasonably priced business license.
