How do you choose between black-box and white-box testing?

In my experience, white box testing is very essential to future proof the application always meets the requirements. With TDD approach we can design the white box tests first and then start implementing the code. This way we always ensure we develop the right software and avoid over engineering. Integrating code coverage tools like jacoco, sonarqube, gcov etc.. to the application code helps us finding out the missing code and can add the tests. We can also set new code rules in sonarqube to ensure newly added code should have certain amount of coverage like 90% or so. So that we have good quality code went into production and can see less surprises.

Both white box and black box testing should co-exist in a well balanced test strategy. With that being said I've found that many times in my career the most critical and none obvious bugs were found through a simple innocent black box test.

Can't agree more. In my opinion, Black Box Testing ignores all code changes and only focuses on the input-output relations. It results the lack of identifying root-cause which is I believe the most essential point for not having the same issue again and again.

Once implementation is in front of you, it's harder to think out of the box and plan the tests as you can already imagine the tests results. As well as while there are other testing then the boundary and functional test that can not be tested using the white box testing method.

It is important to understand, that you never "choose" between white-box and black-box testing. Most of the times the choice is made for you - as a beginner QA tester you might not even have access to the code of a feature that you're testing, and even if you do, there's still a chance you won't be able to understand what it does without dev's help. Usually the best approach is a combination of both test types, where first you design your cases without knowing about inner structure of the test object, and then you analyze code to fill in the blanks left from black-box design. Also, sometimes it might be reasonable to see what exactly was included in the bug-fixing pull request: this might save you testing time and prevent unwanted changes.

Don't. Testing is covering someone's . . . Interests. The drive behind it is one of three things: 1) proper coverage of things that you can imagine that will go wrong but need an outside process to cover 2) due diligence (sometimes called healthy paranoia) to cover unlikely but bad scenarios have at least checks and warnings 3) named tests The problem is why we do #3 and things like LABELING the "box". Too many "test cases" are done because someone wants a signoff so we have boxes checked. The letter of the law, as it is said, completely ignoring the spirit of the concept. Instead, we should let 1 and 2 drive what is tested and write tests as an end user, a process administrator and as a developer. The boxes define themselves.

While doing the testing we cover in all aspects, but I also feel that we should do Random testing as an exploratory testing. So that we know which parts are breaking, sometimes the system might crash when we do the Random testing . So once for all after completing the system integration testing, regression testing , Random testing would tell us the surprises where the system breaks.

I believe it depends on individual perspective. The areas of functionality testing. Most important is the time constraint. For a good QA, it is important to have an understanding of in and out of the code for better verification of the same, ofcourse..if the time permits. However, for cosmetic change verification, black box testing is enough.

I have read everything written by AI and commentators and noticed that majority is from development side not many from QA. I started IT career as developer and switched to QA with proper training. I know first hand how different Dev and QA mentalities are. So I do not agree with the structure of the topic. It should not be about black box vs white box testing but about when and how to use BOTH for getting best results in timely manner in particular situation. I have great experience in all kinds of testing and would have been happy to give not generic but realistic examples that make sense. Unfortunately the space is limited and I cannot expand on it without being superficial.

Grey Box! It all depends on what QA have access too. If DB access or API access is restricted then Black Box is the way and you cannot go wrong if its done right. If QA have access to API's and DB's then I say Grey Box is the choice. You can build many scenarios when you know the conditions of the code and data flow of the application. Back that up with end-user scenarios and good business requirements and you get a balance of coverage. Going Grey Box also helps boost data driven testing. You can seed all manner of different data combinations that the database allows which leads you to test the API and UI and see if it handles the various combinations.
