Flowmeter selection is itself a subject ; major considerations (Assumption Moderate operating temp) : (a) Allowable dP in the circuit (Head Type Flowmeter is the first choice ; start with a square edge Orifice). (b) Turndown and Turnup requirement of the process (Head Type Flow meters are laregely restricated to 5:1) (c) Properties of the Liquid (High Viscous Flow would need an Quadrant Orifice ; whereas fluid with solid fines will require an eccentric Orifice) (d) Line size and Flange rating of the Pipeline. (e) If the application is part of Custody Transfer. (f) If the flow meter is at the discharge of a positive displacement rotary equipment , use a Coriolis Flowmeter. (f) If the application demands Bidirectional flow rate measurement.

Flowmeters are one of the most critical instruments which needs proper "selection and sizing" to ensure optimum design and performance. If accuracy is the concern then Coriolis type is preferred, whereas orifice or venturi type can be selected if cost is a concern. Magnetic type is preferred when we have ionic solutions. Actually we need to thoroughly consider all process conditions such as the temperature, pressure, viscosity, density, and corrosiveness of the fluid along with other conditions such as cost, installation space, frequency of maintenance, etc to come to a conclusion during its selection.

To choose the best measurement meter, we should define and know what items to be measured, conditions, specifications. Sometimes, not all measurement equipment can be used and ok for the tests, depending on many factors such as temperature.

There is another type of flow meter available in market which is called open channel flow meter used to determine the quantity of of the fluid drained out of the system.

we had a case that during Basin engineering design, orifice plate was selected for a 42 inch flare header. However, our instrument department ask us to reselect since orifice plate was not a good idea for such a low pressure and large diameter piping. we finaly selected venturi flow meter which could cover our range of measurment with reasonable accuracy.
