How do you certify your project management skills?

I worked in Ericsson during the late 90's. I was trained Their inhouse Project Management Methodology was based on PMP. They sponsored me to do a "Diploma in Applied Project Management" in UCD. This included preparation for the PMP exam and membership of the Institute of Project Management. It was a wonderful experience and very worth it (Ericsson was a great employer and consistently demonstrated their commitment to employee development). I would recommend pursuing certification in PMP, Agile and Scrum. All value for money qualifications and achievable in my opinion.

It is very common. The main aspects of project management are time, scoop and money. For me, project management certifications like PMP, CAPM, and Prince2 - despite the information that will be provided - would only be required for a resume (CV) as they are required for project management positions. But if a person wants to become a consultant and provide training related to project management, then obtaining these certifications is a must.

Decades ago, I successfully initiated, managed, and closed various projects by using my academic knowledge skills, with simple logic and without any fancy Project Management courses. Just recently I went through formal certification for project management to support my credentials. It was so easy to pass all the tests because I had real-life experience and solutions in my professional history.

I could not agree more on the above statement, with so many different options to chose from, it can become difficult to follow a structured approach to training and certification. This was true for me and a few of my friends who in their eagerness to excel in project management signed up to everything from Prince 2 to PMP, CAPM and ITIL only to realise after investing all the time an effort that they will seldom use all of what they learnt in their core field. If you research the available options and align them with your personal and business objectives you can chose the option that is right for you.

Once you know your goals, you can choose a certification that will help you achieve them. . Research the different certifications available. Get their recommendations on which certifications are most valuable in their field. . Choose a certification that is relevant to your work experience. If you have a lot of experience in a particular industry or project management methodology, choose a certification that is specific to that area.

I would add that it is important to consider the following factors when choosing a certification: Your career goals and aspirations: Do you want to specialize in a specific industry, domain, or methodology? When I was taking my course for the CAPM and the PMP the instructor made a great point that helped my perspective going into the exam. The statement was essentially that when you take the exam, you need to approach the questions as the PMI version of a project manager, and not with your previous experience as a project manager. You're going to want to answer the questions using your own experience, and that will cause you to possibly fail the exam. Set your experience aside for the exams. For the CAPM, a large portion of the questions come from a few knowledge areas, such as Integration management, make sure you know those few areas extremely well.
