If I am mentoring someone who is working, I'm normally trying to find out the role of someone's current job, position or business in the wider context of their life and future. It's often useful to identify a very long-term future vision, which isn't inhibited by what people think is possible in the next few years. We normally talk about a 25 or 20-year view and work back from there, to understand how what we do now can contribute to that. This provides the basis for a set of 5-year goals, a 1-year goal and then, if useful, the next 90 days. Using this simple framework, I've helped people identify major life changes they can make now, to help their current position be a far more active part of the future they want.

I think support is the most important part of mentoring. Sometimes people just need to be heard and not given a solution or judgement. Simply listening and showing you care can be just as valuable as sharing connections and experience. Talking with a mentee allows then to work things out themselves without being given the final answer so they can grow without feeling like someone has held their hand to do it. Support and by extension trust are integral to mentoring for success.
