How do you build a winning team?

The first step in building a successful team is like laying the foundation of a grand house – you need a clear and inspiring vision, and a set of tangible goals. It's about defining what your team stands for, what makes it unique, and what culture you want to nurture. Having a vision and goals isn't just about paperwork; it's about rallying your team around a common cause that stirs their hearts, motivating them to work hard and smart. It's also a way to keep track of how you're doing, like checking a map during a road trip and ensuring you're on the right path to success.

The best way to create a tight knit team is to lead by example. Never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. Always be seen completing a task you will ask others to complete in the future and continually assist when you can. Create a culture of family and show that you will support your team when needed and ask, don’t expect them to do the same when you call on them. In my experience a strong team wants to perform for the team and I have examples of people pushing boundaries when a positive outcome for the whole team can be made. Not for everyone but worked well for me in Sports Turf Management for 7 years where we didn’t lose a staff member and accomplished some amazing things in sport.

Building a winning team starts with you - the leader. If you are not a winner, you will struggle building or developing a winning team. As a leader who wins, I learned how to think, speak, and act as a winner. Therefore, I understood the living-inner workings of winning and grew in this thinking to coach my team to win. Winning insights: #1 inner working of winning. Know that everyone has intrinsic value that positions them to win when it is properly harnessed. #2 inner working of winning. Learn, take Risks, and Action new things. #3 inner working of winning. Embrace and lean into change. Vision creation, goal setting, and standards coupled with the above will help you to build a winning team. A Winning Leader does this.

Many teams are built within the constraints of uncontrollable variables (previous rosters, goals from the top down). Control what you CAN control. Build relationships with your people. Many individuals are cast aside for perceived "weaknesses," but everyone has something to offer. Get to know your people and understand their motivations, what they care about. Help them to succeed as a part of your team. I have coached players who were relegated to the bottom of the roster, who became the key to a championship team. I have mentored teachers who needed to find their voice and confidence, emerging to lift students to new heights. Know your people, be one with them. A great army does not just recruit the best soldiers. They build them.

Developing people. Building collectively. Having human values guiding all processes. Being empathetic in the development journey. And living life in the present moment. After all, how do we define that we are winning something?

The second key step in building a winning team revolves around finding the right folks who truly click with your crew. It's like putting together a puzzle where each piece has to fit just right. First off, scout for players and staff who bring the necessary skills to the table, the technical know-how and game smarts specific to your sport. Next, pay close attention to their attitude; you want team members who are passionate, hardworking, resilient, and eager to collaborate. Keep an eye out for potential too, folks who are open to learning, growing, and getting better every day. Lastly, ensure they vibe with your team's overall vision, goals, culture, and style, because teamwork is all about that synergy.

Providing opportunities to team player. Set small targets aligned to goal. Understand team players strength and weakness. Open feedback from individual.

This in my opinion is for sure the most important. Surrounding yourself with people who are good for the culture you are trying to build, who all have their own strengths, and work well in a collaborative effort. A positive culture and having people who have a different skillset than you will make the difference.

I think when recruiting people for your company, sport, etc. you should always look for people who have passion in the area and have the right skills to complete the job. I also want to say you want to hire someone who is good at working with a team on projects events etc. You also want to find someone who fits your culture and your values at the company.

In my experience, having the right people on your staff makes a difference. As a head high school softball coach, I had to start over with a new coaching staff because my former staff wasn’t compatible with my coaching style. My coaching staff now is resilient, passionate and committed. They want to learn, are open to feedback, and have a teamwork approach mentality. Everyone is onboard with our teams vision, mission, and goals; which, is demonstrated through player development and performance. Our program runs like a well-oiled machine.

Finding people who might not have the most on their resume but have the right drive, and basic skillset you believe you could mold into how your company works could make the biggest difference. There are a lot of talented people who want to grow and show their worth, those people will work incredibly hard for your company.

The third key to creating a successful team is to help your people grow. It's like being a gardener nurturing plants. You provide the tools they need, such as the right soil, sunlight, and water – in our case, facilities, technology, and a budget for training. You also give them opportunities to flourish, like entering contests or challenging projects – these are like the sunshine and rain that make plants thrive. Feedback is like patting them when they do well and gently correcting them when needed, just as you'd care for your garden. And offering support, like a mentor or counselor, is like being there to guide and encourage them. Essentially, it's about creating an environment where your team can blossom and reach their full potential.

Be a insider mentor and coach to guide people. You are the driver of the bus where you are carrying your team. You have rules and guidance to finish the job together

A great coach never let's their star players leave. They know what they need in order to stay long before they even express it themselves. Make them feel appreciated and still hungry for more. Talk with them to know what is going on in their minds, private life etc. and create a judgment-free environment where anyone can speak up even in a room full of people. Give incentives based on what they want. Sure money is nice but is that all? Do they need more days off or even a flower now and then? Appreciation is key and will bring stability and gratitude along the way.

Nite agree in retail. I prefer analice the environment and decide who is better to continue but it’s not necessary keeping the same people. Prepare new ones and create a swerve team and continue growing

Yes, adapting and innovating is critical in sport in order to keep up and stay ahead of your competition. However, you have to balance new ideas / changes with stability and consistency. Your players have to be able to execute the same tasks consistently and on the highest level over and over again. And they have to do so in high-pressure situations. So never forget that consistency is key and needs to be trained.

"Improvise, adapt, overcome" , like Clint Eastwood said in the movie Heartbreak ridge. Not all people have the mindset or guts to go all the way and also sometimes even in another direction. However sometimes it is much needed and by knowing your team, them knowing themselves of their capabilities, you will then have a team of people who will be up for the challenge and grab it by the horns.

To build a winning team, focus on vision, hire A-players, simplify, innovate, obsess over details, promote collaboration, prioritize customers, inspire, learn from failure, and have a long-term perspective.
