1 Skills and competencies

To be a successful strategic planning manager, you need a combination of hard and soft skills. Hard skills such as business acumen, data analysis, project management, and communication are essential for understanding the industry, market, competitors, customers, stakeholders, and how they affect the organization's performance. Soft skills such as critical thinking, creativity, leadership, and adaptability are also necessary for evaluating scenarios and alternatives to identify the best course of action for the organization. Additionally, you need to generate innovative ideas that can improve the organization's competitive advantage and inspire and motivate others to align with the organization's vision and goals. Furthermore, you must be able to respond to changing situations and adjust strategies accordingly.

Strategic planning: one of my favorite topics! It's a tough job though. Besides the skills mentioned on point 1 of this article, the most important skill (the one that trumps it all) is: *ability to connect the dots.* Here's why: strategic planning is all about putting it all together: what the company has been doing, where the company wants to go, who are the players in the industry, how is the market growing, how are our users evolving, what are the new technologies, and so on and on. I have seen far many strategic planning managers getting lost in the sea of data, without being able to connect the dots. But there's always a thread! once you have done it a few years, you will see it, quite clearly actually. It takes practice though.

Depending on industry, in order to implement strategic initiatives, a strategic planning manager should possess various skills such as: analytical & critical thinking, problem-solving orientation, financial & technology acumen, communication and project management skills. As far as competencies go, an effective strategic planning manager should manifest strategic vision and leadership, while being proficient in deal with risk and change management.

2 Education and certification

There is no fixed educational requirement to become a strategic planning manager, but most employers prefer candidates who have a bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, management, finance, economics, or a related field. Some employers may also look for candidates who have a master's degree in business administration (MBA) or a similar field, as it can demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in strategic management.
